Hello all,

I have a 10g fairly new tank. Worry not everything is cycled of course but I started noticing orange patches here and there on my sand. All levels are within normal ranges so I have no idea what this might be, but then again I still consider myself a beginner and I don’t know much about this topic… hahaha but I tried to do research on this and I found nothing. I was thinking maybe it’s diatoms?? i do see my clownfish picking at it maybe even eating it. hopefully it’s not bad. I only have a clownfish and rocks in this tank. I attached some pictures hopefully that helps. My very photogenic clownfish wanted to be included.

Scroll past the nitrogen cycle stuff to the algae cycle... What you're seeing is diatoms, a natural step in your tank's maturation.

What is that weird purple/multi-colored rock in the middle? Are you sure it's saltwater safe?

Yes! That one is just live rock the others are regular dry rocks… I got the live rock at a local saltwater store. Thank you for your concern!!
Is it a man made type of base live rock? I've never seen anything like it before. The colors on it don't look like normal live rock and it doesn't look very porous.

Life rock or live rock?

I've never seen Caribsea Life Rock before. It doesn't look like natural live rock from the ocean, hence why I asked OP what it was.

Caribsea Life Rock is basically concrete... Not porous at all and a HUGE P1TA to frag!!

It reminds me of the Real Reef dry rock (expensive manmade painted junk rock) that I bought a few months ago when I was first restarting my tank. I ended up taking it all out and replacing it with KPAquatics base live rock.
