Can anyone help me identify what this is on my dottyback? This fish is pretty new to the tank, maybe 3-4 weeks. All the others have been in this established tank for approximately 3-4 years. Tank param are good! I’m set up to try and catch this fish but first would like to know what I’m dealing with if possible and if it’s even necessary since they can be pretty hard to catch. Thanks in advance.

It isn’t super clear in the pics, but looks like it could be damage from another fish. Since the dotty is the new guy, some of the more territorial residents (wrasses, clowns, basslets, etc.) may be picking on it. What’s the full tank stocking?

That would be cool if that’s all it is. In the tank I have two clowns, one Benghi cardinal, Cleaner shrimp, tuxedo, and conch.

Do you have any stinging coral? It looks like some sort of physical irritation to me and the uniformity on its underside makes me think something stingy which can regularly tag rock weaving fish like dottybacks

Interesting. Ok, well here is a full list of the tank. Mushroom coral, candy cane coral, green star polyp, Hammer/frogspawn hybrid, montipora, Acro, stylopora, sea fan, and pulsing Xenia. The life/fish in total would be, clowns, cardinal, urchin, cleaner shrimp, two conches, Bumble bee snail, Turbo snail, emerald crab, and a ton of vermatid snails on rocks in hidden spots.

These are not sting’s but either bite marks or bacterial treatable with seachem neoplex
Clowns would be my suspects

I don’t see anything in your stocking list that could cause this through bites.

Have you seen the fish scratching or flashing? Flukes can cause scale damage like this.

I haven’t seen it scratching or anything like that. I had a royal gramma once before and it had a disease and was very distinctly scratching/rubbing against the rocks. Nothing like that with this one (yet).
