I'm about to start a new job where I'll be in-office 5 days a week. Up until now I've always made sure any livestock arrivals would align with my WFH days, but I no longer have that luxury. What do y'all so in this situation? I'm sure I can't be the only one

I built my tank in my office at work, so it is easy for me. My other option would be to take PTO on the days I expect fish to be delivered, but I have a fair amount of flexibility there as well.

You could have the package held at your local delivery hub for pickup (assuming UPS/FedEx). Then it doesn't even go out on a truck.

Congrats on the new job. I'm currently between jobs (last one was remote 100%) and it seems like I'm unlikely to score such a gig going forward.

Thank you! It was a long road to get to this role but I'm incredibly excited. Just wish the logistics were a little more reefing-friendly :rolling-on-the-floor-laughing:

I'm living in an apartment with air-conditioned hallways, so in theory if they left it in front of my door I'd be ok. The challenge becomes the fact that I wouldn't be able to start any acclimation until after work...

Does your new job allow time off? Sick time or personal leave?

I used to get shipments at work, tell the boss about it and get the afternoon off, but would get coral or rock which I generally unpackage at 4pm when I get home.

I would have stuff shipped to my work all the time. Corals, fish, supplies ect.. Especially in winter. And at lunch i'd take it home and acclimate it and add it to the tank. I guess big thing is make sure your employer is ok with you receiving stuff.

Personally I don't think your going to have any issues with your package sitting in a climate controlled hallway for a few extra hours. My wife will generally bring in any livestock I receive and it might be five or six o'clock till I get home. You should be fine as long as you trust your neighbors!

Never thought of the office idea! It's a small business so I may need to get a bit of credit in the bank before I start having boxes with "live tropical fish" start showing up, lol.

For fish, though, I do think I'd need to have them delivered to me somehow, to check for DOA. But outside of a poorly packed Wellso, I can't say I've ever had any DOA on the coral side over the years. Do others find that to be the case, or have I just been lucky? And if they aren't DOA, how long could fish or coral hang out in the bags before I got home to open them, assuming I took the DOA risk and ordered them to my apartment?

I had my wife bring them inside, sometimes float them for me. Now I'm a 15 minute walk home, so I go home and liberate them.

They should be fine in the AC till you get home though. They were bagged for much longer getting to the vendor.

I've never had DOAs with corals, but I also pick my shipping windows to spring/fall and check the weather for the week in whatever part of the country I shop from. Since shipping can be undependable now, I've started to buy from regional vendors, two or three states away. I've gotten corals shipped two days USPS from Ohio to Vermont and they would open up within hours. Most of my overnight corals are in the box over 24 hours, but less than 30. I've gotten late overnight shipping that came at 8 pm one evening.

My DOAs generally come from snail deliveries from Florida and those are mostly mail deliveries which would be several days. I usually shop local now for them or do overnight shipping.

I've never ordered live fish through the mail.
