Hello,

I'm about to start stocking my 55 gallon FOWLR and I was hoping to get some other opinions on whether I'm overstocked. I have a 15 gallon sump, and am currently doing a 5 gallon water change a week. Current plan is:

2 Clowns (already have)
1 Royal Gramma (already have)
2 Bangaii Cardinals
1 Lubbocks Wrasse
1 Lyertail Anthias
1 Pearlscale Butterflyfish
1. Lemonpeel Angelfish

9 fish in total. Any thoughts?

If you plan on coral in the future- You dont want these butterflies
Gramma MAY be an issue with new introductions- mine couldnt care less

The number of fish should be fine

Ok, thanks! Wasn't planning to do coral so the butterfly should be fine. I'll watch for aggression issues with the gramma.

Should be fine. Recommend QT first and maybe adding 2 fish at a time every 3 to 4 weeks.

What are the dimensions of the tank?
If it’s less than 3’x2’ floor space remove the Lubbocki and Butterfly. These guys are active and long term, won’t do too well in this size tank.

Ok, I'm on vacation right now, but I'll measure when I return home on Sunday. But I'm pretty sure it's the standard 48" by 13" bt 20".

looks good to me, I have this anecdotal observation in my tanks that grammas tend to have a conflict dissuasion ability - mileage may very

Depends on rocks... is there enough hiding spaces for 9 fish to have their own personal cave / spot?

I feel like you need something that perches or hangs out toward the bottom, like a hawk or watchman goby or blenny.

The butterfly might need more room eventually. Believe it or not, lyretail anthias males get pretty big and active.

I second the hawkfish, blenny or watchman goby. Having something on the bottom really adds dimension. Also really good for getting bits of food that fall to the bottom of the tank during feeding, before the food gets into the rock work or goes down the overflow and rots. I have a falco hawk, very cool fish. My piece of advice is to not add the fish too quickly—max of 2 at a time, 1 if they are bigger. When I started my tank, I kept putting too many fish in too quick. They would inevitably die and affect my water quality if I couldn’t find the body. Then I would add more fish, they died, and the cycle would repeat. Also, If you put a lot in at once, it’s a huge bio load increase which your tank will have a hard time adapting to.
