i want to make a pico with a sump because i’ve always thought sumps are great for any reef tank such as a refugium with chaeto, small live rock, and a small skimmer if there’s one that can fit. some people at my local fish store said that it’s not needed and i should just put a hob filter. but in head i think why go bare minimum with a hob filter that can do a little bit of work to help keep or reef when you can get a sump with all things i said and make it even more beneficial. any thoughts on this? am i wrong?

Certainly nothing stopping you from adding a sump, but IMO that just defeats the object of keeping a Pico Reef. Most people keep Picos because they take up very little space, and are very simple, just a light, heater and pump. Due to the small water volume, just do regular 50% or greater, water changes. No skimmer, Fuge, GAC, GFO, just water changes. Have you decided what you would put in the sump and why?

probably just corals and maybe a neon goby but if i can find a smaller fish that stays small i might put it in too. that is after i read up and see if that fish is safe in that size tank

I'm looking for ideas using HOB and would love to try a pico chaeto reactor as well.
