Hey Reefers,

I have a newbie question regarding my plumbing.
IMG_20200614_185950.jpg

Do I need to strap the pipes?
Will the pipe holds without them?
The intake pipe will have bulkheads on the sump(not in the picture). The return pipe will be hold up by the tank.

I am planning to put a backboard for the sump. If I need to strap the pipe, I will have to get a thicker board (1inch)

Any input are greatly appreciated

Thank you

My research led to supporting PVC a must. Then I saw someone’s build who had it installed by “professionals” who didn’t strap anything.

Size of PVC might make a difference (smaller than 1” vs larger than 1”).

Curious what the experts will tell you. I want to support my plumbing to, still figuring it out-myself as well.

Hey dreamcatcherr9,

Thats what I see also. Hence the question.

My intake pipes are 1inch and return pipes are 3/4. But the extra lines on the return, makes it more heavy. I was thinking of just supporting the return pipes only. (2x4 along the backboard)

I read anything with water needs support. So the main drain line as well.

I bought a Exotic Marine System overflow (1.5” drains). They had videos that clearly said you need to support drain lines as well.

Members here verified return lines needing support for sure.

I am going to try to support all PVC a little a least. Finding a “clean” way to do it is my issue!

My pipes are not that long... If I removed the union and valves. They would be very light. But of course... That would make them not practical at all.

Thank you dreamcatcher. I think supporting them would be best. Even with just 1 strap each

Does anyone use rubber inside the straps to help reduce vibration?

I actually used plastic plumbers tape for my build. it wont rust, and makes replacement a breeze, I wish I would have gone with clamps, but they got pricey real quick and I have big gaps from plumbing to mounting surfaces so I would have to Mcgyver them in there any way. at the end of the day the plastic plumbers tape just looked better.

to answer your question, yes support your plumbing, its not worth the roll of the dice..... unless the thought of having water on your floor is not a big deal to you.

Thank you Barnabie for the input. That tape might be the solution I need.
