Everyone has that little thing in the hobby that caused the wonderful snowball addiction that is reef keeping and well for me that always has been and always will lionfish! I remember the very first time I walked into an aquarium that was selling marine animals and in one of the tanks was one of the most gorgeous p. volitans, I was so mesmerised I spent 20 minutes just watching this wonderful fish do it's thing.
Enough blabbering though, on the occasion my lfs gets in fuzzies which I adore but I went in the other day and much to my absolute joy and delight, he has in one of the nicest d. biocellatus I've seen in a very long time! Now I can't possibly keep one in my reef as I have lots of expensive meals in there for even a small mouthed lion, I thought I might be able to get away with housing the little guy in my sump tank but alas that's a little too small for their needs.
Fast forward a few hours till when my partner got home and I was able to bombard the poor woman with my excitement and joy of seeing this gorgeous little fish, I think I must have been a little over the top about it all and also in my disappointment about not being able to get the little guy because to my great surprise she said "let's look at getting another tank".... needless to say I nearly exploded lol. So this brings me to the point of my post haha.
It's some questions to deal with some plans I have for setting this tank up for my potential lovelies! I've been looking at some small options to house a couple of species and would have loved to do a Nuvo drop off tank for it but even then I think it's too small and my buddy at the lfs reckons it would be a little uncomfortable too.

So after all that nonsense, my plans are sitting at getting a Mini Reef 120 (2x1.5x1.5') (30g + sump) and upgrading it to a properly capable tank for such beasty little critters. Now I'm comfortable with housing the single d. biocellatus in there but I have some others I would love to add and have a couple of buddies in there with him. So a few things I'm looking at as friends are the following:
- P. radiata I would ADORE having one of these guys in there as well but I'm a little iffy on this given the size of the tank but someone please tell me I can get away with it lol
- Caracanthus sp. for something different and I don't think he'll be consumed
- Antennarius maculatus we get these occasionally as well and would make another nice addition.
- Any other mixed preds like leaf's or scorpion's or even wasp's but I don't think we can get wasp's here in Aus.

Pretty much the stocking on the tank will be "light" (lol) and only have 2 or 3 fish at very most with a combination of any of the above. As this is a dedicated setup to these guys any requirement can really be met without much worry, it'll hardly be more work than my sps tank lol. The plan is live marine feeder shrimp and hopefully eventually transition to gut stuffed frozen silverside :) I'm not getting my hopes up on the d. biocellatus transitioning though but we'll see :)

Man I can ramble, thanks those that have read the whole thing haha
Well it goes without saying that I'm going to have to tag my lionfish idol @Lionfish Lair as your work with these wonderful creatures I constantly follow :) I would truly appreciate your insight Renee :)

remember it maybe cheaper to start of with a small tank but at some point you will have to buy yet another tank. then get it up and running followed by trying to transfer the livestock. it maybe best to save the money and just get the size tank you need in the long run. Good luck and will be watching

Think you could swing the mini reef 160. A fu and warty in that tank would be great. I have both those fish, in different tanks; I think they would make great room mates. My fu was a rescue, eating only live; he will occasionally eat dead but not nearly enough to sustain. I advocate feeding warty's live, so i have no problem keeping live foods for my predators. If you went with a 3rd fish, like say the leaf scorp; I say something in the 60-70g range.

I think the 160 minireef is also the best in the range for the price you pay. I got a 150 because it was the biggest one we had where I work, then a few months later we got 160s and I regretted the 150 decision completely. The sump design and the "normal" tank shape of the 160 easily outcompete the rest. Plus you get a reservoir + ATO!

This tank is being set up with the pure intention of two or three fish and only for those fish, my main reef is the one that will always grow bigger lol but this tank is purely for me to house the fu manchu and a buddy which is why it's only a small tank :) So this is a "forever" tank lol

What a cutie!! :D I do adore fuzzies but then again I'm biased towards all lions lol

We live in a small apartment that will barely fit the 120 plus my 90g reef lol so the 120 is my only real option for the largest tank to get unless I went custom but I just want this to be an easy off the shelf option :) The fu is already eating dead and the lfs is going to try frozen silversides today but either way I'm happy with the point he's at :) I plan to gut load/stuff any food he will be eating too :) Any tricky species will be on live to begin with!
The stocking options are either going to be a Fu + a Radiata or a Fu + two small predators like a Wartskin, Coral Croucher or something small and similar. Unfortunately we can't get waspfish here because I would love one of those guys!

Unfortunately we can't fit anything larger than the 120, when we move that will change but for now I have to take what I can get in the space we have :( I've already got the ATO, skimmer, heaters, powerheads and everything lined up for the 120 too so at least with that I know I don't need anything extra!

I would rethink the radiata, he's a medium body lion that will easily get over 7=8" in a home aquarium and have a wing span more than that.

Well that's definitely some groovy news!! :) Do you know what species they are??
I have a Fortesque Waspfish which I caught myself: see the front of the trio.

Aaaaand a Paracentropogon longispinis female :D

Dang @94Roarge where are you finding all these rad fish?
I'm STILL looking for that yellow spot scorp.
I might just be lucky ;) they aren't terribly common though, I will say that aha.

That's so cool! I'm down in Melb and I would totally pay to send you out to catch some :P haha. I've never really asked about predators for my tank as it's never been possible but with a new tank it changes everything lol I'm hopefully getting my Fu tomorrow and HOPEFULLY the new tank in the next few weeks as well :) I'll probably have a long chat about the other predators I have access too with my lfs :D

OH MY GOD (again!!) :D haha now you're just showing off!

What are you feeding all your predator family?
Most are pretty good, my tiny Dwarf Fuzzy Lion eats anything I put in (including anenome pellets), the misc scorp eats most things, the yellow spot likes shrimp (live or dead) the Fortesque eats litterally anything (including nls pellets) and the longispinis is only taking live shrimp (but she has only been with me for 2 weeks) [emoji1]
