even this ?No , the potentiometer would most likely overheat and quickly fail as it could not sink the current.
It won't hurt the pump, but the pot will likely be very unhappy. So would it hurt to use a potentiometer for a Sissce power head?
Ok I don't know what to call the type of motor involved I don't think its a shaded pole what is it called. Anyway is Dcc a way to go ? Pulse Width modulation? If you are talking about a pump with a AC motor then the 60 cycle AC is what determines the speed and not the actual voltage. BLDC motors are similar but the controllers can change the frequency of the pulses and the direction to control the speed and direction. But those need a controller with the drive electronics to power and control them.
Most of the speed controllable motors you will find in this hobby are some form of BLDC is they are ment to last. The Sicce SDC type pumps are a form of BLDC but so is most of the more recent drum and capstan motors VCR's and the drive motors in EV's. The regular AC motors were inly designed to run at either 50 or 60 hertz or both in some cases.Ok I don't know what to call the type of motor involved I don't think its a shaded pole what is it called. Thanks I will spend my morning tomorrow looking up all your acronym's lol . If I am correct those motors come with a controller and are mucho $$$$$ yes? Most of the speed controllable motors you will find in this hobby are some form of BLDC is they are ment to last. That explains quite a bit. When I was last in trade school over 30 tears ago picking up my third trade a representative came in from Leeson Canada . They developed what he called maybe simply for us as the trade was air conditioning, and refrigeration pulse width modulation for three phase industrial motors. I thought possibly a potentiometer would be something applied to an AC power headLet’s not confuse Brushless DC Motors with AC power heads.
But in any case, the BLDC motors are speed controlled through frequency control (PWM) or sine wave manipulation. In a similar fashion, frequency manipulation (VFD) is used to speed control some AC motors. However single phase AC motors don’t have enough poles to keep torque as they are slowed. They start to slip phase and generate a lot of heat. So most controllable AC motors are three phase with complex drives.
In any case none of the motor types used in our pumps are candidates for speed control via resistance or voltage manipulation. We can get into details and math if anyone wishes. Brushless, brushed, synchronous, asynchronous, shaded pole, etc.
