SpectraPure® MaxCap RO/DI System w/ Manual Flush 90gpd

guy is selling it used for $50. doesn't sound like it comes with any of the hose connections (to sink or spicket). Even if I had to buy those do you think this is a good deal? Does anyone out there own this unit and love or hate it? Any mods necessary to get this bad boy running like a machine? Thanks!

Spectrapure makes great systems. In addition to all the hoses and connections you will want to replace all the filers, resin, etc. When that's all said and done you might just want to buy a new unit lol.

That's a good deal for that SpectraPure system. You can buy the saddle valve or hose adapter for less than $10. Shop around for the filters and RO membrane. You should be ready to go after another $80 after the initial $50.

9 times out of 10 a used RO/DI will need all new filters, membrane and DI resin. I hesitate to buy used unless I know the history of the system.
The MaxCap is the best RO/DI in the reef hobby bar none. The replacement filters, membrane, flow restrictor and dual DI cartridges will cost you much more than $80 someone mentioned but may still be a good deal since they are like $300 new.

Something like $85 for filters and resin, $60 for the membrane and $6 for an untrimmed flow restrictor.

I think that's a good deal. As mentioned earlier and used Rodi I would replace all the filters and add a tds meter. Which is $100 total or so

$85, $60, $6 and $25 or so for a good ATC handheld TDS meter doesn't add up to $100 with my math skills?

So...I see your a keyword ninja.
Let me be more clear.
$100 in filters. If needing a new membrane which is not always the case it would cost $60-70
If you wanted to add a tds it would be more.

You can bet if they are selling a $300 RO/DI for $50 it will need everything replaced. Most people figure at least 1/3 to 1/2 the cost of new is a fair price for a used piece of equipment. I sold my old MaxCap for much more than that and it was a steal. The buyer was tickled to get it.

TBH I am thinking this unit is hot (read: stolen). the guy is saying it was "his uncles who recently moved to California." hmmmmm Feels like I've heard that once before...(officer). He doesn't know anything about the unit (other than he has it it) and he's got no idea what equipment should come with it. So, who just has an RODI around to sell anyways? Seems sketch if you ask me.

But, seems like I could just pick up an RODI buddy for a quick $100 anyways. Don't really see myself needing the 90 gallon a day big boy anyways...

Currently using RO water from a local source can tell it's accelerating my algae problem, so the sooner I can get better water into my system the better...

Would have to drive to pick this one up too...BLAH

Pass on the RO Buddy and get a real reef quality RO/DI. Spectrapure has them starting at $125 and I have yet to hear of anyone who was not happy with it. Normal 10" replacement filters, a full size vertical 20oz refillable DI, an inline pressure gauge and backed by the best in the business. Add a handheld TDS meter for $25-$30 and you are in business.
You might also look at Buckeye Hydro and PurelyH2o for good systems. All are much better choices than the little cobbled up portables.

Average at best and more expensive .
Spectrapure is the only vendor who specially treats all of their RO membranes which is proven to improve their performance. They are also the only vendor to custom blend all their own fresh reef specific DI resins in house based on thousands of hours of testing. They use only low micron absolute or near absolute rated sediment and carbon block filters, capillary tube flow restrictors the end user can adjust to suit their water conditions and they provide pressure gauges even on the $125 system. No comparison.
Increase your membrane performance by just 2% and you double the life of your DI. Add better DI to start with and it's even more. Do a better job of protecting your carbon block with a lower micron near absolute sediment filter and it will last longer and protect the membrane better. Think of it as a well thought out system from start to finish. When it lasts longer and works better it costs you less to own and operate, your cost per gallon of treated water goes down.

Totally agree.

I just purchased the SpectraPure MaxCap 90 1 week ago and couldn't be happier.

I was originally thinking of going with s BRS unit. However I believe the BRS units come with a 1 micron sediment filter (SpectraPure MaxCap is 0.5 micron) and the BRS comes with a 5 micron carbon block (SpectraPure is 0.5 micron).

The MaxCap comes with 2 dual TDS meters built in.
This setup monitors the incoming tap water, the water leaving the membrane, the water leaving the first DI filter, and the water leaving the second DI filter.

It's also great being able to actually call SpectraPure in Arizona and asking them any questions that you may have. I called them a couple of times before purchasing my unit and they actually helped me to decide which unit to get. They didn't try to up sell me anything.

Call them. You won't regret it.
