I want to run a Rena xp3 or xp4 on a new 125gal tank i am getting. I dont want to have a HOB protein skimmer, does anyone have any recommendations?

Tunze sells some skimmers that mount in the tank on the rim, it looks like a small black box no pumps showing the Tunze 9010 would be a good fit.

From your post I assume you do not have of plan on having a sump? If it's possible a small cheap 20g tank will make a fine sump and then you will have lots more options for cheap effective skimmers.

you will be happier with a skimmer canisters will require lots of cleaning more than what most people do on their freshwater tanks

I havent decided weather i want to run a sump or not.
The thing is i dont know much about them so i dont know what to look for.

Right, well it can be real complicated or real simple. my sump is just a simple 20gallon tank, return pump, a bag of carbon, and a protein skimmer.

I'm guessing your tank is not "reef ready", Lifereef makes a very easy to use hang on overflow that works very well. Or If you still have time I highly reccomend getting the tank drilled for an overflow.
