Quarantine Tank Question

Greetings,

My 90 gallon cycle is almost over and I’m going to be getting my 2 pair of clowns shortly. They will be the only 2 in the tank to start. I have few questions….

Should they be quarantined since they are the first 2?

Aside from that, im still going to set up a quarantine tank. The question I have is should all fish be quarantined and when using the word quarantine do you proactively treat with any sort of meds or just leave them in the QT for a few weeks while watching and feeding them?

I did a lot of research and saw a 10 gallon, filter with no media, salinity of .35, a heater and a few PVC pieces is all that is needed but as far as when to QT (outside of visible sickness) is where I’m kind of being confused. Thank you!

I would QT them . That way there no chance of something getting into the new system.

I would QT them too, with medications. Here's the R2R QT protocol with a few options depending on how much time you want to dedicate to this, and your level of risk.

While you're cycling your tank would have been an ideal time to QT your first batch of fish

Make a choice to either qt or not qt, there is no middle ground. If you don't qt these clowns, then no need to qt anything else. If you do qt the clowns then keep it up forever. IMO

I Disagree and I am not trying to start anything and no long med no med debate but you can QT for observation for at least 30days . If something shows up treat it . If nothing then place in tank . By 30days ich , velvet , brook and uronema should have showed up . Especially with most clown . They are farm raise don’t really have any natural immunity to anything .

I Disagree and I am not trying to start anything and no long med no med debate but you can QT for observation for at least 30days . If something shows up treat it . If nothing then place in tank . Observational quarantine, while not the best practice, really needs to be done for 45 days.

If the clowns are coming directly from a breeder and have never been housed with wild caught fish, you could skip a comprehensive quarantine.

If not, then the quarantine process linked for you would be best.

I do wonder - are you getting two pairs, four fish total? Were the two pairs firmly paired up before you get them? Even in that large of a tank, you may run into trouble with the two pairs fighting, or all four fish fighting if the pair bonds are not very strong….

If you intend to QT your fish, then...

Yes, since they're from you LFS, it'd be best QT them. No telling what other fish may have been that LFS tank prior to the captive bred clowns ... so, the 'chain of sterility' has most likely been broken.

And it should be done in a separate, dedicated QT tank — because they may be the first fish that are going into your DT, but if they carry something in with them, then, it's in there until...

A) they show symptoms and you have to treat them — in separate tank anyway ... and also treat the DT with a fallow period

B) they show no outward symptoms ... yet still carry and infect fish that go in after them

I would not start with a pair of clowns....unless they are babies...those momma clowns get very defensive and attack any new inhabitants....so I have experienced. Unless you put much bigger fish in or multiples those momma clowsn....grrrr
