Anyone have any experience setting up a quarantine tank? It seems my fish have some how gotten ick. Im going to be following the instructions in this link for hyposalinity. http://www.petsforum.com/personal/trevor-jones/hyposalinity.html

Im still not sure how the fish got ick. I havent added any new fish in over 6 months. Any help on setting this qt tank up would be greatly appreciated.

I've never set one up for fish, but starting one for corals, I usually have some sort of filter media that has colonized with bacteria from the main display that I can use with the new tank to get it going. I always use display water to set them up, so the water is well cycled. Once it's up, just clean filters and what not as normal. Water volume is usually much lower and there will be much less biological filtration available than the display, so watch levels and keep clean with WC's. Hope that is at all helpful.

Good advise Gflat. Im going to be using a hang on the back aquaclear filter. I put the sponge into my sump so it will get some good bacteria. Ill probably put a bunch of my frag discs in the filter as well. They have been in my sump for months.

After 3 hours of completely destroying my tank, I finally have all my fish in the QT tank. I dropped the salinity from 1.026 to 1.024. So far all the fish seem healthy. The only thing I'm worried about is my mandarin running out of food.

:( That is terrible...

I use a soda bottle with the top cut off and inverted to catch fish (Put food inside). In the morning there are always inverts and fish in the bottles (I use 2 liter ones, or Gatorade ones if it is a bigger fish).

Try sticking a piece of LR or macro into the QT if he starts to run out of pods. I had always thought mandarins were scaleless and it was harder for them to get ich???

I hope he does better...!

I ended up putting a few rocks in the QT tank. So hopefully he will have enough food to last a few weeks. I think it is harder for mandarins to get ick but I didnt want to chance having him get it while the rest of my fish were in QT. So I just put them all in Qt.

Good luck Jesse

I have had ich sprout up in the display a couple times in the last few years, out of the blue. Just added some garlic to the food for a couple weeks and all was fine again. I hated the thought of tearing the tank up.

I read mixed reviews on using garlic. Some people said it works and some say it does'nt. I fiigured my tank is not that big so why not go with the sure thing(hyposalinity). Tearing the tank apart was horrible, but I did get to reaquascape.
