Went to LFS today to purchase my first coral. I was going just for GSP but came out GSP, a nice zoa colony and this frag. I think it is a finger leather coral, please correct me if I’m wrong. After doing some research it seems like I didn’t pick the best of pieces as it’s very small and looks like it’s limping and maybe even a couple brown spots on it. Any advice on how to care for them, what type of coral it is, if it looks in good shape, etc, is very welcome. It didn’t have any polyps extended or any bumps at the LFS and nothing in my tank yet (only been in about 12 hrs and lights just shut off 15 min ago).
And yes I know I have a piece of hair next to it. I got it out lol

To me, it looks like a neon green polyp toadstool leather. Moderate flow, moderate to high light, the addition of iodine helps growth. Sometimes they produce a waxy coating when they shed. This usually happens when they are moved to a new place, experience growth, or tank conditions change. Just be patient with it. You should see some progress on it soon. The toadstool leather was one of my first corals. It should be just fine.

Okay sounds like I have it in the perfect spot! Thank you for clarifying type of coral. How can I dose iodine and test for it to keep levels in check?

Okay I will look into it, thank you
Please take large amounts of precaution before dosing iodine. There is bountiful amounts of information on this and how potent it is. I would encourage you to rely on water changes to keep iodine in check rather than dosing for now.

Well I’m back on here again with an update on the mystery frag. I went to my LFS that I bought it at and he said it was a devils hand. I asked him about no polyps and he said it might take a while to develop since it’s such a small frag. But it looks like it is drooping even more now, is this a bad sign? And it does look like it is shedding...
the first pic is yesterday when I got it and second is today
