Randy's Tank and Learn Thread

How did dipping the gonis go? I forgot to ask a few weeks back.

I had the very tough green algae issue in my tank. The only way to scrape it is use the scraper manually with force. Now I got these hitchhikers that multiplied in my tank and eliminate this PIT neck green algae. I wonder why they are not sold as part of CUC in the US.

Limpits of some sort. IdK why they are not usually included in cuc packages. I see some places carry them from time to time. I think a lot of them are more of a temperate creature not faring well in most warm water reef tanks. Seems yours are doing well maybe you can breed enough to sell to the world!

Video

Took a video this morning. Everything seems to be doing fine, except the botryocladia macroalgae, which the yellow tang (or something else, maybe) ate the little bladders off of. The stems remain.

UV

I cannot be sure that the uv bulbs in the return brute did anything for the “dino” problem, but I turned them off. No need to run them when there no apparent issue.

I actually did not dip the goniopora. You can see it at the end of the video. Seems to be fine but is very small. I did dip the Oregon tort in KCl/tank water.

I agree with that approach.

I personally don’t care if my corals come very small. They grow super fast for me, and I think it’s fun watching the progression.

I understand the folks who like them larger, though. It makes sense. 🙂

Nice!
Looks like everything is coming along well. The elegance looks to have put on some size!

Yes, I think it has. Certainly doing well, even if it is just expanded more than it used to.

In a tank like yours, that makes great sense. In an almost empty tank, it looks lonely. lol

Feeding

Eheims are still feeding Prime Reef flakes 8 times a day. I will be setting up the Londa feeders with Hikari Seaweed Extreme and TDO chromoboost.

I was manually feeding some chromoboost today, which the chromis and tang love, and a pellet was caught by the LTA and that part of it contracted so I suspect it ate it.

I bought a fresh clam at Whole Foods today. Will chop it up for the fish and the LTA later today.

Lost Montipora

When I was placing a batch of corals in the tank a few weeks ago, I lost a Red Setosa Montipora coral down into the rocks.

I now see it in a cave and it apparently landed upright in a place where it gets some light. Maybe it will survive there.

Assuming they are limpets, as suggested, I have some that came on the TBS rock:

So far, so good, but let’s see if the yellow tang finishes it off tomorrow. It certainly grows well.

The tang certainly comes back to it over and over to eat on it, so I consider it a significant success. :)

One use in my situation is just before I leave the house to travel, I can put a large clump for the tang and foxface into the water and allow them to eat on it for days without worry about rotting and such that dead macro (e.g., nori) would risk.

Eggs?

One of the plastic overflows has new additions of what may be eggs. Might be one of the new CUC snails, and probably a big type since these are each about 2 mm across.

Anyone know what they are?

Oh wow. That looks wonderful under your lights.
