I was wondering if any eels are safe to keep in a reef tank with a flame angle, neon dottyback, two clownfish in an anemone, two shrimp in an anemone, blue tang, fire fish, purple tang, and mandarin goby? I have heard that they will eat any small fish and shrimp. Are there any nice eels?

The closest you can get is a pebbled toothed morey eel. Small fish and all crustaceans are on the menu. They may knock over coral but won’t eat them.

Fire fish and small fish like those are def in the menu.

Melatremus eel is pretty safe. They stay small, though the shrimp may be in danger.

Ok. That’s what I kinda figured.

What about anemone shrimp? Or crabs and lobsters. Is it likely to eat my mandarin goby or dotty back? Or any others?

I've never had one eat a fish. Inverts are a possibility.

Meletremus, aka golden dwarf moray, is a pebble toothed, invert specialised predator. It would be a rarity for one to go after fish.

Didn’t realize golden dwarf was a pebbled tooth thought it was a fish eater. I do believe that @Robin Haselden had his eat some fish.

Gymnothorax is a genus of sharp toothed morays, and they eat fish. My G. melatremus ate over $200 in fish over the course of 2 months before I figured out what was going on. You normally don't hear of them being fish eaters in captivity because people keep tangs and triggers and huge fish... but I keep all small fish. Basslet, blenny, goby, wrasse, cardinal...

I would call the golden dwarf reef safe only with large fish. I've never seen mine go after my shrimp or hermits. Its in a nano now with a coral banded shrimp. Any fish small enough for it to swallow is a gonner.

Don't choose a tiger moray or any eels that has a more pointed mouth since the ones with the pointed mouths are mainly ones that hunt fish. This is coming from experience with a tiger moray who ate my $80 clown and 1 chromis in a single night, 2 days after i fed it. Eels with more rounded mouths usually eat crustaceans so less chance of attacking fish. BUT I REPEAT DON'T GET A TIGER MORAY IF YOU HAVE SMALL FISH!!!

there’s 4 of them in my 350. As you can see in the video I have tiny fish. Over 15 shrimp as well. I do feed them well. My snowflake does concern me though long term.

Gymnothorax melatemus, an fang toothed eel that will eat small fish. Unfortunately your mix of inhabitants would not do well with any eel. As in @locito277 situation, in very large tanks you can have a little more leeway, but miss a feeding and all bets are off. If raised up from juvi on dead food on a stick, they aren't as likely going to chase a fish all over a 350g, if they can just wait for a hand out. But it's still a risk.

I feed religiously. Even then if one goes hungry and it will eat what it wants.
