I am a reef hobbyist from Long Beach NY. I started in this hobby in 2008 with a 120 gallon Oceanic tank. I ran this tank for 3 years with moderate success. This tank was set up with real live rock, which was commonly available back then. It did come with its share of critters though! The hobby was a little more difficult back then. I had no problems with fish and easy to keep LPS coral. The tank was lit with metal halide and VHO fluorescents. I threw lots of equipment at the tank but never really understood what I was trying to accomplish. I had a GEO calcium reactor and even an original aqua controller. Eventually life got in the way and the tank was taken down.
Fast forward to 2020. Lotsa life changes and a new house in Long Beach. I started getting the reef bug again. I bought a 60 gallon Coast to Coast cube used on Craigs List. Just about this time Covid arrived. I was out of work for 18 months. With nothing else to do, I went all in on the hobby! With the new technology and the amount of information so easily available I was able to grow out a successful acro dominated tank. The 60 cube soon became too small. In 2024 I contacted Felix at Reef Savvy. With lots of back and forth we came up with a plan and I placed an order for a new 260 gallon tank. The tank is 72" Long x 28" Tall and 30" deep. It is also drilled for 2 closed loops. With the order placed I soon broke down the existing tank. I have been documenting this process all along and since I have recently received the tank it is now a good time to start sharing my journey. Here are photos of the 60 gallon with basement sump:
