Rescued Favia ID!

Anyone recognize what this favia is? I rescued it from receding back to about 2 1/2 heads from a guy breaking down his tank after "letting things go."

It didn't even have color left... But I like what it's turned into!

Its going to be pretty much impossible to ID. Why not ask the person that you got it from what it is.

I am no Favia ID expert but I am pretty sure it is one of these two! Good score and kudo's for bringing it back to life!

I am thinking Mia's Pot O' Gold. notice how the skirts are turning burgundy at the bottom left? That is how mine looks.

I don't understand the ianiwane's posts like on this thread...There are similar posts of theirs in many posts of the id section.

I realize it's not going to be a 100percent ID from a photo, but I log on to a website like reef2reef to get pointed in the right direction. I looked for a match myself before posting...and wasn't sure as I haven't seen many of these favia's in person.

Iani - Like most people that post for help on here...I did ask they guy I got it from, and he had no idea what it was. He paid quite a bit for it but was a guy that didn't worry about names - just wanted "pretty" corals.

For the other people that wrote back and helped, thanks a bunch. I'm not wanting a name to frag it up and sell it. Just wanted to know what I brought back to life!

I think ianiwane's post reflects a sentiment of a lot of reefers that are trying to avoid the increasingly common trend for people to pick up random pieces that don't come with names and try to attach a trade name to it. This has become especially rampant in the zoanthid sector and people seem to think every single zoa morph needs a name. Most of the time this is purely so they can brand and sell theirs. The most honorable purpose for named corals, in mine and many other's opinion, is to identify a very specific coral from a particular source for the purposes of clarifying which coral you are talking about/looking for. Certainly if a fellow hobbyist has a coral which turns out to be very exceptional, we live in the age where everyone is an aquaculturist and it's pretty easy to frag and share one's coral (share or sell--helping to defray the costs of the hobby). That coral may become very desired and many people may want to get some. At that point, people want to be able to specifically say "I'm looking for coral x", and a name becomes very useful. Of course, you can also see why taking that name and putting it on another coral, even if it looks a lot like it, would not be very ethical. If you don't know it came from that source, then you shouldn't attach that name, even if it looks like it. I understand you may not have been looking to name yours for profit, but in the end it really helps to avoid confusion and hard feelings if people would not try to take a piece that they found without a name and try to have others name it based on established varieties. Corals really don't have to have a name, especially if it's just for your enjoyment. Aside from species ID, there really is no "identifying" an unknown coral. Just call it pretty and if people want it and you want to share some, feel free to label it with your own original label. Hope that helps!

My point is that its almost impossible to "ID" this kind of favia. The babies breath and pot of gold favia look very similar. Both coral also change a lot based on the conditions of a tank. Added on top of that, there are numerous favias that look similar to the two, it is just crazy to ask for an ID. Like Nanofins stated some of us have a pet peeve of sorts with random coral being passed off as named pieces. Even if something looks like this or that it can't really be called this or that with out actually knowing what it is (name or lineage).

Althought I haven't been on R2R long, I've been in salt for awhile. I again realize that it's not a 100 percent ID. And I know people have pet peeve's about corals trying to be passed off as lineages that they are not. This isn't the case, though. I've experienced that myself, but I've researched and educated myself before making purchases to make sure it's the real thing. I'm not a seller, just posted for help and curiousity. Just thought your first post was a little unavailing, and I'm sorry you think it was "crazy" to asking for help with and ID. But this is the section for that, right? :smile:

All right, where's the dead horse? Just want people to continue to help others in a positive environment...
