I understand that prazi efficiency drops on every use as bacteria consumes it. I believe after the fifth dose its is practically useless as the bacteria is able to fully consume it before it can work against flukes. That is unless the tank is completely emptied and sterilized. My question is has any research been done to see if it can work again months/ years later or does the bacteria always exist and it can never work again in the tank. Also has anyone ever had success using it more than 5 times in a tank

Empirically, I’ve found that the degrading bacteria persists for at least 5 months. I’ve managed it somewhat by increasing the PZQ dose, but that is problematic because it just feeds more bacteria.

There are a couple of studies on this, but I don’t believe they tested how LONG the population of degrading bacteria persists. Here is a link to a study from Disney:

Here is my general write up on PZQ:

I dosed PraziPro to my tank 2 years ago and had to use it again a few months ago because a fish brought flukes in (didn’t QT). I dosed once per week for 3 consecutive weeks and went a little higher to account for bacteria degradation. The first week I used PraziPro, but I switched to praziquantel powder for the next two. The treatment was successful, and from now on I’m only adding fish from Dr. Reef.

Good to know thanks. I’ve used it in my display twice for one instance. just wondering if I ever needed to use it again in the future what the efficacy were to be
