On Saturday I brought home a beautiful ribbon eel. It's been at the LFS for about 2 months now and I made sure it was eating frozen foods before bringing it home. I know that ribbon eels are piscivores, so I was expecting that losing my 2 juvenile jawfish and bangaii cardinal was a real possibility. I haven't seen one of the jawfish since Sunday morning. I feel kind of bad about that, but the monetary cost isn't outrageous and that's the nature of the ocean.

But what I didn't expect is that the eel will make halfhearted attempts at nearly every fish in the tank. I knew they were poor sighted but I figured that it would at least ignore fish that are clearly too large to swallow. But it's been lunging at my chalk bass which are clearly too big to swallow. And during feeding time today it nearly bit my marine betta, which is obviously not a reasonable meal.

So what happens if it does bite something too big for it? Will it just kill it and ignore the body? Will it realize the mistake and let go? Can the eel live with any fish at all or is there any way to reduce aggression? Because if it was between all my small-medium fish and the eel I might just rehome everything but the marine betta and make it a dedicated pred tank with lionfish and scorpionfish. But if it's even a serious threat to even the betta then the eel has to go.

Also, is feeding silversides a bad idea? Because it takes them pretty readily (though it seems to have trouble with even pinky-size ones), but if training it to eat invert meat like shrimp and clam would make it less likely to attack fish I'd do that happily.

Here's a video of the beautiful guy shortly after I added it to the tank

Absolutely beautiful eel! The only thing in there 2 big is possibly the betta, they are like snakes and can open their mouths much wider than what you think.

Looks like you got yourself a good 1 as getting them to eat is often the hardest part. Do a mixture of fish and crustaceans besides the silversides (not really the best) and soak in vitamins.

Don't get attached to any fish you add.

It's 100g with a 40b sump. Thanks for the advice btw. I'm seriously considering rehoming the fish and turning it into a dedicated predator tank.

I have a message out 2 him and as soon as I get his response I'll post back. He's 1 of 2 people I go to for more detailed eel information.

So guess who got into the sump while I was asleep? I had to wrestle him into a net by hand to get it out, didn't feel great. He had to go into the overflow, through the PVC, and through the baffles to get there. I'm glad he didn't end up on the floor through all this. Anybody got tips on how to eel proof an overflow? lol

Gutter guard from Lowe's or Home Depot. Had 2 do the same for my chainlink.

Do you have many cave areas 2 where it can hide its body from the light? If not pvc works great.

There's a decent amount of room through my rock structure he likes to wrap himself in, but it's not enough to completely submerge himself. But yeah I've been planning to get some PVC for him to bury under the sand. I have the PVC itself, but I just need to get some joints for it.

I have a BRS window frame/mesh top weighed down by my 3 light fixtures and he obviously hasn't been able to budge it yet. I'm not sure if he got into the overflow through the teeth or went over it, since the of the overflow is a bit lower than the rim of the tank.

Wow chalk bass can be really cheeky lil buggers. I was feeding the eel a bit of silverside and the chalk bass just snatched it right out of his mouth! The chalk bass realized it couldn't swallow it so it dropped it, and the eel chased the bass for a second before going for the dropped silverside. I just thought it was kind of funny lol

Here's the response I was given:

Peaceful small fish. I wouldn't add anything larger than a dwarf angel. Larger and aggressive fish can spook the eel making it hard to feed and see.

So today I made the PVC cave system! 3 entrances, 2 on each side of the tank and one going to the back by the shaded rockwork. I figure this'll give him plenty of security and he can move between the rockwork and the piping as he sees fit. Unfortunately I am going to need some more sand as you can see. Also, it is a pain in the butt burying pipes under sand that's already there. Wouldn't recommend it.

Very nice!

The only thing differently I would have done is incorporate your pipe into your rockwork so that you didn't have 2 bury in the sand. Overall though you've done well. Is it starting to settle in more?

Great work in short time! I saw a similar set up with the barnacles retro-fitted to hide cave entrance (snowflake moray). Give that some thought when you do the pred tank, and good luck!

Beautiful eel. I can help but notice all your other fish were very "on edge" in your video. The stress may not be very good on them long term. But this is just my opinion so I wish you the best.
