its sad but i don't think it was palytoxin, as the dog wouldn't have lasted an hour if so.

and surfn knows better than i about how it works, something about sodium channels in the heart, so crapping blood wouldn't really be a symptom.

Well in dogs, if he had kidney failure from the palytoxin, I am sure he had hemmoraghic gastroenteritis as well. This can and does happen. When dogs have total system shut down, everything shuts down. I can see, if the paly's were dying and the dog just licked it, then I think this can happen.

I remember reading a post once where a guy was trying to kill some paly's and he scrubbed the rocks and put them in a rubbermaid tub. His dog drank some of the water and it wasn't an immediate death. It took a few hours for it to set in.

That is really sad.

Though a fellow reefing friend of mine recently had one of his dogs diagnosed with kidney failure and the vet said it was probably just a congenital defect the dog was born with. Sometimes bad conditions just pop up unexpectedly and without any noticable trigger.

seroiusly doubt it was palytoxin.......there are so many other bad compounds in corals/liverock/slime that could cause anyone number of those symptoms.....its presumptuous to blame it on palytoxin (esspecially the numbness/swelling on the hands/fingers...thats bogus).

i doubt palytoxin would cause any kidney problems, although it may be a secondary problem like what smarsh said. although, i would think a vet would be able to accurately diagnose heart failure right away.

its more than likely just liking the slime coats of corals put the dog into a state of shock....and the kidneys went into failure b/c of any number of odd compounds found in corals. that seems more likely.

Its ashame, but I'd be knocking on chemipure's door or if you knew it had a so/so history use a different product. Phosban and rowaphos work great, I've never had any trouble with them.

I've never had any troubles with palytoxins, My fingertips get just a little tingly after a long zoo fragging session but thats about it. Now zoo juice in the eye takes a while longer to go away. The sting from a torch/frogspawn I find to be a lot more irritating.
