Scolymia Fragging Experiment

nice video, thanks.
I've seen something almost exactly like that with some blastos. I finally concluded that while I was fragging the blastos I fractured or cracked the skeleton and it finally broke while the flesh was still in tact. The weight of the skeleton stretched the flesh. I caught it early and clued the skeleton and it did fine. I'm guessing it would of separated kind of how xena spread. Stretches then separates.

Yeah, a piece cracked during the exit of the tile saw.

Since the skeleton piece only moved a little, the flesh stayed intact...

I really think this could be the best way to frag them. Cut as little tissue as possible and then slowly move the pieces of skeleton apart eventually they will end up separating. How much time, I have no idea. But I need to eventually get the nerves up to try it.

Yeah, I want to experiment on some "reverse" prop tech.

I have a half of one I bought from Mr. Coral a couple of months back. Has completely healed and finally started showing growth. Could take a pic if you guys wanted. Its a bleeding apple scoly I belive.

Update

Sorry it has taken me so long to update.

It appears that the feeder tentacles are filling in and forming a crescent around where the mouth was.

Very nice... Mine has healed into a half circle quit nicely, it is starting to throw out its signature green rim as well :)

Update 07-24-10

Thought I'd post an updated picture. The frag now has a full mouth.

yea very cool thread enjoyed the pics and maybe ill frag my scolys up one day

I've been forced to quit posting on Reef2Reef. The Mods delete my post with no notification or explanation and revhtree will not respond to a private message to offer any insight as to why. Very similar to the 1,000's of stories you hear about Reef Central.

As for the scoly...
The scoly is doing well. Although the experiment was a success, I wouldn't suggest anyone frag scolymias. It took a long time to heal and grow out to it's normal shape. It is still not 100 percent completed.

Let's see if this post gets removed.
Cross your fingers..............

Thank you for continuing to update this thread. I would love to see a new picture. Why do you say not to frag them if you were successful and it has properly healed?

I how it doesn't, it could be a scoly saver if we can get these fragged so we can share and support tank raised corals.
