My grandpa, who’s Turing 96 in August, was an incredible artist before arthritis started to hinder his abilities about 20ish years ago. He focused mostly on wood carvings. He did a lot of freshwater fish, ducks and waterfowl, but primarily ornamental reef fish. He did everything with hand tools. He really was incredible. As a kid, I’d watch him work for hours at a time. Unsurprisingly, he’s to blame for my additiction to this hobby. He never had a reef tank of his own but did have several freshwater tanks and two large koi ponds throughout the years.

He has carvings with family all over the world so I’ll ask around for some photos to share them here with you guys. What better place to share a love of reef fish than R2R?!? Unfortunately, there are also a ton in storage and I’m finding out now that they don’t store well - as seen by the “fin rot” on the long nose. I finally got this one hung up above the nano. I think it’s the only one he ever left unpainted but you can see the detail even better that way. Anyway, thanks for reading and I hope you enjoy - I know he’ll be happy to know that people are enjoying his work.

I just texted my mom and she happened to have photos of some of the carvings that we were looking for homes for when my grandfather moved a while back. Lol you can tell that the fresh water carvings weren’t quite as highly desireable but sill impressive!
