I wouldn't do that. I'm sure I'll just keep it and cross my fingers. Try to find replacement impeller in case the issue hasn't been fixed. I wonder if anyone has installed a different pump somehow. Gotta be a way.

So of course all the reading up I did prior to purchasing the omega 150 never revealed anything negative.... Until I purchase it. Does anyone know if these still have the impeller issues I'm finding now. Last comment for this issue was June 2013. I'm hoping it's fixed but I'm not sure. I saw they changed it to a shorter shaft but not sure if that was the issue. Now I wish I spent the extra and got the life reef or the aqua c ev so I could use any pump.

I came across the same thing when I was looking for reviews on the Omega 150. From what I read it was supposed to have been worked out at around the time they released the Omega 130. But what concerned me was I wouldn't be able to determine if I was receiving one of the the new corrected skimmers or old stock that still had the problem.

So did you end up purchasing one? I'm waiting for mine and I will check the impeller when I get it. I did are pics if two impellers and I'm pretty sure one was considered the old one as opposed to the updated with a shorter shaft. I've heard great things about the skimer as a whole. So I'm really hoping I don't regret going with something that isn't defendant on the pump it comes with.

No I went with the avast cs1. The omega 150 requires you to put your hands in the water to make adjustments to the skimmer and I really didn't want to have to do that. Especially after dealing with my reef octo 150. That thing was entirely to sensitive to oils from your hands etc.

Good call. I didn't know that skimmer was like that. That was one of my big reasons why the lifereef was my too choice.

Question on External Skimmer Plumbing

I have just purchased a SRO 6000 External skimmer. The supply is via a T in the return line. The way the skimmer is setup the skimmer pump would run dry if the return pump stopped working. To me it seems the easiest fix would be to install a check valve between the gate valve and the skimmer intake. I would rather not install the check valve and looking for other ways around it. I am sure other people have ran into this before so wanted to see what you did.

Instead of feeding it from return feed it from the overflow. That's what I did when I ran a das ex1.

Or put return pump and skimmer on same level so it doesn't back flow as skimmer is higher than the return pump

My daughter was just given a 45g corner tank with a 10g sump (no room for a bigger one) from her marine science teacher. It will need a skimmer that will be in sump. She is also responsible for her own tank and just a kid (meaning poor).
What would:
a) fit in a 10g sump
b) work well
c) cheap as possible

Thanks!

I think the best option is to stock the tank lightly so that live rock and reasonable water change schedule are all that's required.

If there must be a skimmer then, in spite of the sump, I'd have to recommend looking for a used AquaC Remora hang-on skimmer online. You can expect to pay <$100....great performance...can handle a much larger tank...easy to clean...and you'll have just that much more room for something else (or water!) in that tiny sump. You'll be grateful for the extra room to work/do water changes/dose down there. :)

(There is an in-sump version of that skimm called the Urchin...an incredibly small footprint....it's just a lot more rare to find used....grab one if you can.)

Thank you Matt and iamgant :) I think you're right Matt. She will only be having softies, Nems and a few LPS, a CB Shrimp, CUC, and 5 fish in it. Pair a clowns, pr. Of fire fish and 1 blue cromis. She has LR and LS from her old 27g hex and should be enough to seed new rock and sand.

Maybe for a graduation gift I'll buy her a real sump. I'm thinking an Aqueon model 1 (it's only $139). I have an old coral life skimmer that uses an mj1200 that she could use later if needed. It's just too tall for a 10g tank sump.

Why does my seaside aquatics es5 protein skimmer aver flow after water changes

There and be a couple of reasons. Though I am not familiar with your model skimmer. I have had this happen when a) I didn't unplug my skimmer when doing the WC and b) I didn't know enough to mark my sump when my skimmer was finally dialed in.

Try this. Get your skimmer dialed in. Then put a line with tape or sharpie on the water height line of the sump. Then when you change your water, fill your tank only untill water starts to drain into the overflow box. Turn return pump back on then in 5 minutes turn your skimmer back on. Your sump waterline should be exactly where it was before the WC and the skimmer shouldn't overflow.

Another skimmer overflow problem happens when aminos and such are dosed. Always turn your shimmer off and give it a few hours or more before turning the skimmer back on.

Just wanted to give an update on my experience so far with the avast cs1. So far the skimmer is a beast. It skims like nobody's business pulling out about a half a cup of tea colored stink in a week with some visible chunks which is pretty good imho given the size of my current tank. The hum that I was hearing earlier was user error the feed pump was touching the skimmer which was causing an annoyingly loud humming sound. Since I fixed that issue the skimmer is nearly silent.

I am using a Coralife super skimmer 65G hang on the tank.

There are a ton of simple mods to do to that skimmer to make it function much better. That said, once I had mine dialed in in my frag tank, it rocked out the dark black skimmate. Google super skimmer mods. The fishing line on the impeller takes 5 minutes to do, and helps a lot. There are several others that you will read about that are also easy.

Good luck and enjoy!

Does anyone know anything about the reef octopus classic 225. Returned my omega 150 when I came home Saturday to it not working. The impeller snapped inside after just two days. That's gotta be a record. Not sure if I should or want to just replace it or go with something else.
