I hVe a 30g and I use the CoralLife. The only think I don't know how to control is the small micro bibles that shoot into my tank. Makes it look cloudy.

Do you have a compartment in the back were the return pumps go etc? If so measure the space they make some skimmers that are designed to fit back there innovative marine has one that has a small footprint, but you may have to mount the skimmer inside the tank

I bought an "all included" aquatop aquarium that came with a protein skimmer. There was no form of documentation and I cannot find the model online. I'm assuming it's a custom for this aquarium.. So my question is. The tube on the top that comes out open to air has a small cap on it. Is this to come off or on? The line leads down towards the power head but I don't see it opening to anything.

Sorry to butt in but I searched the thread and did not find any information. Does anyone have any experience with the "new" Aqua Euro Apex DC Pro 320 Cone skimmer?
Is the pump a waveline ? Looking to know ideal depth, pump info, scfh/lph and general efficiency. Thanks to anyone that may be able to help me. Cheers.

What so you guys think about vertex omegas 150 or rlss r6i /8i for my 100 gallon system with 16 fish and a few more later. Trying to decide which to get for my tank

What defines low or heavy or super heavy bio load

Hey everyone, let me get your thoughts. I got tired of the small collection cup on my skimmer and made a couple mods. It now skims into a 5 gallon bucket from the sump with a little PVC from Home Depot.

Is it possible to over skim your tank?

I just bought a Vertex 150, and I am a very happy camper. It is outperforming a Diablo 160 by leaps and bounds in terms of skim mate production. I can't comment on the other skimmers.

As for bio load, 16 fish SOUNDS like a HEAVY bio load, unless they are all 1" damsels. ;)

This looks like a really bad plan to me.

Cleaning it will be a nightmare, and I am sure that you are losing a lot in the way of production. You could have drilled a drain hole in the collection cup, added a barb and drain hose into the bucket for a lot less time, and effort. I know we don't like to hear negatives about our ideas or visions, but in my opinion this is a step backwards for you.

Actually, I took all that into consideration before production. Nothing is glued, just firmly pressed together, longest piece is 8 inches. The tower on top of skimmer only sits 4" tall, 1/2 inch taller than the factory collection cup. I get more skimmate production than before.

Your assumptions are incorrect.

It may be worth pointing out that this is neither new, nor a bad idea. :) Tunze has offered this option for their skimmers for as long as I can remember.

So, I just bought my first skimmer after being in the hobby for over a year. My skimmer knowledge is, therefore limited. I have a Reef Octopus BH1000. Hooked it up using YouTube videos because, well, you know about the directions that come with it! Anyway, it was easy to find a video that shows how to adjust the bubble level, but not one where it shows where it is supposed to be when it is first started. There was one that said to keep the bubbles at the bottom of the tube in the collection cup, but I can't get mine to sit in one place. It ranges in the bottom 2/3rds of the tube. Also, how long before I can see cud in the cup? here is what mine looks like now. Is it "about right"?:

If it's skimming (and it is) you're doing it "right"! ...if that's really what the question is. :thumb: :)

Once it's skimming, the quality of the skimmate depends a lot on your style and how you care for the tank. The quality of skimmate does not have a huge effect on the amount of gunk you actually get out. (See the various articles on skimmate that Advanced Aquarist has published.)

You are skimming dry right now. The PRO's are that you don't take much if any saltwater out of the tank along with the skim. The CONs are that you don't remove quite as much waste and your skimmer gets dirty much faster, which degrades performance.

Wet skimming, which is my preference, gets a bit more gunk out and keeps the skimmer clean for a much, much longer duration, so skimming efficiency is maintained. More water is pulled out of the tank - sometimes quite a bit depending on how you tune the skimmer. If you wanted, you could pull so much water that you use the skimmer to do your water changes, for an extreme example. But for most people who skim wet, it's just enough water to keep the neck of the skimmer from getting gummed up too quickly.

That's exactly what you want , we call that dry skimming that foam will collect and turn into black nastiness much like this skimmate from my reef dynamics skimmer
