Still tossing around the idea of a cryptic fuge which will consist of a small glass tank, reverse undergravel filter/flowpath and a small surface skimming overflow utilizing an emergency stand pipe to prevent accidental overflows. I really like the the Eshopp eclipse S for this but wondering about other options.

As the flow rate will be quite slow (IE low volume) i'm thinking that the entire system can be gravity fed. A tee off the DT with flow control and an overflow into the sump (with flow control). A taller type tank with room for rock/gravel and a few cryptic creatures.

I got a version of this from someone on R2R and I think its a great idea.

Thoughts?

Concept is fine. Like most things, the devil is in the details. So, what type of flow control in & out are you detailing?

I would think the best would be 2 gate valves as they give the best/finest control. I'd have to be careful with the substrate as it relying on gravity to push the water. Then again, a RUGF may add some extra complexity that isn't really needed. A simpler option would be to evenly distribute the incoming water a few inches off the bottom. Then I could use any type of substrate I wanted (or a combination). Nice thing is this will be external to the sump so I can play around with some ideas.
