Was hoping to pick up a few items for my new frag tank during this Black Friday weekend. Unfortunately, the discounts for aquarium equipment were very small. How I miss the old days!

Anyone find any great Black Friday sales?

Well I was not looking for anything major. One of our local LFS ran 50% off livestock and significant discounts on used equipment. Picked up a Yellow watchman goby for $10, a baby Marbled Wrasse for $27, and a fresh cut GARF Bonsai for $30. Also picked up a large Skimz SM203 skimmer for $50 that had the wrong power supply.

Now to get my 120 running since the skimmer is too big for my 92 corner sump. :)

As far as I can recall, discounts on the major equipments have always been 15% with handful 25%.
I do stock up on ongoing use item during Black Friday - test kits, RODI replacement items, carbon…things that I know I will use.
You can get some corals and fishes at a good price.
Good luck with the setup. I always like shallow tanks that shows the true beauty of the corals from the top.

No different than any other black Friday sale. What were you expecting to see? Afaik, MAP items always been 15-25% off during Black Friday. The only difference is that stuff are just more expensive now so even though the discount stayed the same, you paying more than before. For example, Hanna test kits used to be $50 regular price. Now they are $60 and with 15% off, back to pre-pandemic regular price

What scares me most is that the hardware is getting so expensive and the local retailer is going out of business because they can’t compete with the internet store prices on dry goods. Slowly the online prices are moving up but it’s already too late for the lfs that closed up.
Have you ever tried to shoplift at an online store?

My LFS had 10% off of fish and 20% off of coral. I picked up 2 beautiful Seriatopora and on order I have a Yasha goby. I didn’t really take advantage of the discounts as much as I normally would (I used to bring home Atleast 5 corals). But I’d say £8 ($9.67) for each of these pieces is a steal.

It was a joke, at least online. I bought 4 @noopsyche k7 pro lights October 17th for $209 each with no sales tax. I would like to add one more but I wait. Black Friday I see they are offering $39% off. I'm like heck ya. Go to the site and they are $309 and they are now charging tax. One light shipped is now $242. I'm like what the heck. Needless to say I didn't buy a light. This whole black Friday thing has becomes farce. But hey I didn't hear about anyone getting trampled so that's the positive I take away from it. :rolling-on-the-floor-laughing:

While equipment and supplies price have increased, I am seeing a decrease in livestock price, especially with common fish.

- Hippo tang $40
- Foxface $40
- Pintail wrasse $50
- Tomini tang $60
- Red firefish $10
- Royal Gramma $20
- Banggai cardinal $15

And many more...

And even coral price have gone down with $75 gold torches, $30 named acros like Bill Murray, many encrusters at $10-$20.

Can’t blame cargo shipping on the prices. Containers from China to the west coast went for about $3k pre covid, peaked at about $21k and are back down to under $3k.
The idea is correct.we are paying around $1800 per container to long beach, the expensive part is domestic transportation with diesel being so high plus the cost of the raw materials going up is whats crushing the economy. Fixing diesel prices would do wonders for inflation.

Not much margin on equipment to discount .... from unless a seller wants to sell it as a LOSS LEADER

Now corals and fish? HUGE markups

Most times sellers try to TRIPLE their money on fish and coral.

They'll buy a $100 colony and frag it up into $300 worth of frags

Same $100 investment in equipment for sale... they may only get a $20 profit at a $120 sale price
