SPS and flow

SPS noob here with a question on flow. Am I supposed to blast my wavemakers or am I looking to just create chaotic water? My fish for the most part stayed away from the water flow because they would just get blasted across my tank so I turned it down a bit but how much flow is enough. Any advice is appreciated.

The most important thing is to make sure there are no dead spots in the water. Turbulent flow is ok, but randomized flow is better.
