Steve’s LEDs ~2.5 years old biocube 16. Got home from work today and noticed a wierd smell in my bedroom where my biocube is. Noticed the lights were out but the fans were still running. Hurricane controller still was powered on.
Took the case off the housing and noticed some salt creep in there as well as some dust buildup. Will attach some pics below. Don’t notice anything unusual although I honesty have no clue what I’m looking at.
I called support at Steve’s LEDs but I’ve read online that they’re not the best at responding. Is anyone on here familiar with these lights or have experienced anything similar? Or familiar with electrical and could help me out?
This was a pretty expensive light and would like to save it. There’s corals in there that I’m worried about. I’m thinking about letting it sit in rice and trying tomorrow as I’m really busy tonight

Just curious-- were the LEDs installed right away, meaning are they a full 2.5 years old?

Yes they are definitely over 2 years old. I can’t find the exact purchase date but yes they have been a trooper. Only issue was during a water change I dumped some water on the AC/DC converter box thing but after some time in rice it was fine: that was about 9 months ago

Is that past expiration for something like this? Can’t imagine they only last that long

Okay hear me out for a sec

I know it’s bad but to be fair it has been 2+ years sealed up never looked at… outta sight outta mind ! This is exactly how it looked when I opened it

Fans still on + hurricane controller still working is what has me stumped

From your description sound like the salt creep or dust could have shorted out a circuit due to either corrosion or just a straight short. You might be able to find someone who dabbles in that stuff locally on Facebook and might have the tools to locate the short and solder to fix it.

Not a bad idea about Facebook but I’m sorta in a small town. Will def try though.. Is there any way to tell what components could possibly be bad by comparing the wiring diagram to my situation ? The smell had me thinking something is seriously wrong.

If you knew the whole schematics, you could use a volt meter to test each circuit.

You could also disassemble, take photos as you do so so you know how to reassemble, clean the parts with rubbing alcohol, look for discoloration/bubbling or smell. Chances are whatever was making the bad smell still smells that way. Electronics hold that burnt smell forever it seems
