I guess maybe coralline algae is sucking it up? I'm not too sure. Green hair algae doesn't mean you failed, that's a totally normal part of a new tank. Especially if you start with live rock. What I would suggest for hair algae is snails and a yellow tang maybe some hermits and an emerald crab but only after the tank is cycled and reading 0ppm ammonia. I just fear that the LFS took advantage of you because you're new. A lot of people don't run half the filtration media that you are running and still have very successful tanks. Another way to remove green hair is just to pull it off rocks by hand as often as you can. It's a lot of work but it's more natural than all that filter media. The main issue with starting a tank off with all that fancy stuff is the tank will begin to rely on it. And that's a lot of stuff that could eventually fail and cause another ugly algae outbreak. It's all preference though, I just prefer to use less because it's cheaper and it all works out in the end. Hair algae isn't harmful for anything unless it's smothering corals which you don't have yet I'm assuming? So just take it slow and steady! I hope to hear you succeed this 3rd time around and no offense but definitely quit asking the LFS about anything [emoji23] they just like to sell you stuff lol.

My guess is green hair algae. I had it bad when I started with live rock in the past. Maybe get some snails and stuff if you don't have any. Emerald crabs are great too.

Honestly just keep up on water changes and pull off the bulk of it by hand. It's ugly but it won't hurt anything unless it's totally covering corals.

We have algae correction threads that span 200 pages, google peroxide in the reef tank, and have literally hundreds of pics where the before pictures are like yours above, and the after pictures are of an algae forest. hopefully the after-after pics were decent, but the keepers did present quite the mess usually.

The best thing to summarize those pages is that what prevents algae isn't the same as what removes it when you see it slowly encroaching, you need to simply remove it using the most creative means you can muster. animals and water controls are for prevention, not removal, but only if you want a guaranteed win that involves extra work on your part.
all natural hands off methods may or may not work, forced compliance works, and generates all those giant threads.

If you leave it for indirect controls, or for animals, you take a chance that force-compliant practitioners simply never see in their tanks.

You can only have a wrecked algae tank if you literally grow it on purpose, and that's occurring right now. To not have that rock picked clear of algae within 24 hours, lifted outside the tank and literally rasped off then the surfaces cleaned with peroxide, means we want to roll the dice, simple as that.

your options are strikingly clear to me, but only after seeing five thousand hesitations come to fruition. this seems crazy to any other reader, they'll leave it in I guarantee you 100%.

:)

http://reef2reef.com/threads/bryopsis-kents-tech-m-treatment-thread.262845/page-8

look specifically at posts 149 and 148 here

148 is specifically, specifically, exclusively, in that boat by not taking action in the direct phase your tank is in above. No other cause. If you let your patches spread (GHA vs bryopsis does not matter at all, all same ends) then you are looking at an 8 page correction thread in 2020 or giving up totally from reefing, its that angering to hesitate and learn a delayed action method right up front.

it doesn't matter that hand cleaning your rock is cheating and unnatural, its that there's a counter option to an eight page thread in 2020 until someone finds a better way. heres that way

I tried cleaning all mind in the past and it came right back. I just assumed once it sucked up all of its food source it would die off

that scrape portion of the link was ideal, getting the anchor and the substrate was the key link

My Reefing Journey so far,

Lot of changes done and lessons been learned in this two years and still I can say that I have reached only 60% of my goal.

Big / Short note on my journey so far,

-Changes the Chiller and connected a Titanium coil to outside compressor unit
-Changed all my Ac pumps to DC
-removed all the unwanted reactors
-After struggling with nitrates and under the guidance of Mr.Donovan (Who is no more withus) installed the "Poorman's nitrate reactor" on Sep17.
It worked like charm and due to my impatient, i have made the reactor to clogg again and again by over dosing bacteria / VSV. Finally on Apr.2019 removed it and installed a suplhur reactor
-removed the maxspect 420 led and changed to 2 AI Hydra 26hd on Nov17
-Added Aquaticlife T5/led hybrid light set on Dec17
-Changed my skimmer to Skimz SM163 and after year and getting a big fan of Mr.Jeff, changed life reef skimmer on Nov 18
-removed sand and went bare bottom on Apr18
-Increased flow by changing return pump to DCP15000 from 12000l/h on May18
-recently added KW300 kalk reactor from TLF on May19
-Skimz Algae reactor added on Dec17 and removed on Jun18 due to no production

For the last 25 years all the reading materials for reefing says to let brand new reefs fill up with algae, and then slowly hopefully go away as something called the uglies phase

When people choose to use that method we can see that a large portion of tanks never recover and the algae wrecks their tank for 2 years. It appears you opted out of such a ugly face and demanded your rocks comply from the start is that right? Well done if so

Yes you are right. Too faced all the ugly phase and lost my patients many time and trying so many things to get rid of algae. Finally learnt to be patient and made the things get set by itself. My final battle is with nitrate and still trying to get the same in control finally with the sulphur reactor. Choose this way only for less maintenance and to be precise. Let the time decides and show its reaction& betterment.
