Good Morning R2R! I have decided to begin my journey on my third reef tank. I'll be building a mixed reef tank in a Cade 1500 (5' L x 2.3' W x 2' H) with fleece roller mat, skimmer and refugium for filtration. Am chasing some input on my current thoughts for fish! I should mention that I wish to keep a variety of inverts along with fish (clams, shrimp, snails, worms).

First time experimenting with a number of these fish so would appreciate feedback on if there are any incompatibilites between for or fish unsuitable for the setup I'm proposing. I realise this may be excessive stocking numbers also so would appreciate feedback there (just thought I'd chuck everything I'm considering into the list and cull from there!):

  • 1 x Yellow Tang
  • 1 x Blue Tang (Paracanthurus hepatus)
  • 1 or 2 x another tang? (Achilles, Naso, or Gem)
  • 5 x Disbar OR Lyretail Anthia
  • 2 x Standard Ocellaris clowns
  • 1 x Coral Beauty
  • 1 x Bicolour Angel
  • 1 x Flame Angel
  • 1 x Emporer Angel
  • 1 x Majestic Angel
  • 1 x Lawnmower Blenny
  • 1 x Bicolour Blenny
  • 1 x Six-line Wrasse (I love a lot of the wrasses but understand there are a few compatilbility issues here)
  • 1 x Niger Triggerfish
  • 1 x Yellowtail Damselfish
  • 1 x Black Cap Basslet
  • 2 x Firefish
  • 1 x Mandarinfish
Thanks in advance for your feedback.

Regards,
Aaron

  • 1 x Yellow Tang .good add later as become aggressive to new arrivals
  • 1 x blue tang..good, relatively peaceful
  • 1 or 2 x another tang? (Achilles, Naso, or Gem) nano will become too large
  • 5 x Disbar OR Lyretail require frequent plankton sp feeding o5 times a day
  • 2 x Standard Ocellaris clowns always
  • 1 x Coral Beauty
  • 1 x Bicolour Angel - pick one out the dwarf else they will chase each other
  • 1 x Flame Angel -all dwarfs are a slight risk to coral
  • 1 x Emporer Angel -pick one out the Pom angels.. will eat lps and soft coral
  • 1 x Majestic Angel - least aggressive out the 2 here..will eat soft and lps coral
  • 1 x Lawnmower blenny - pick one out the blenny
  • 1 x Bicolour Blenny
  • 1 x Six-line Wrasse -little jerks
  • 1 x Niger Triggerfish -will eat CUC at some point..pretty territorial, mine used to attack hand
  • 1 x Yellowtail Damselfish -aggressive when bigger, better as a shoal if kept
  • 1 x Black Cap Basslet ..nice fish, deep water naturally so expensive...royal grammar or orchid dottyback similar fish at lesser price..
  • 2 x firefish...add first as very shy
  • 1 x mandarin...requires mature tank or you to culture Copepoda

I would give damsels a miss, as they are **** when they get bigger, one exception I would consider would be Allen’s damsels as these are pretty peaceful, do well in a small group, will spawn also..I would favour the Achilles over a gem, but add last to the tank, as this will be the dominant fish I would assume....if you add a gem tang it will be war with the yellow..adding together may help but I wouldn’t in a 5ft..
Proper QT procedures either with copper or tank transfer is a must
