glad your back man (I bought your 112g tank) and hopefully I can learn with you in real time as I too have an acro nano… 38g cube I estimate around 30g with rock displacement. I have had a couple rtn on me one started from the top and stopped at the base, the other had a white patch on the base this morning when I woke up. I’m doing 5g a week water changes with reef crystals but my alk sits low 7-7.5 despite my mix reading 12.5. Poor time to wake up this morning to one losing some flesh as a got a awesome order in today from Adam over at b/c. Luckily it’s some really hardy stuff crossing my fingers and hoping I can gain some more knowledge from the legends I’m sure will be coming through this thread

What's up brother!!!
Sorry to hear about the acro woes, it's a real thing, but lift your spirits, plants and animals both understand our energy, and these are both plants and animals! I run 6.8dkh and that is my preferred sweet spot, likely a huge quick swing is the culprit, but hopefully things bounce back soon, I am certain they will. Text me anytime, that reefbreeders is now collecting dust, just love my t5s, lol...
We well my friend!

Welcome back! Your ig had me scratching my head lol… I wasn’t sure what happened or if it was the same Perry!

Whats up Lee! My brother, yeah, I have been back for a minute, and have some of my jewels back in my possession, lol... Stoked my boy Matt hooked up the acros, and my buddy Steve hooked up the acans. This project is something I threw together, too many subs on YouTube to let down, plus unfinished business in the acro game. Glad to see a fellow "PRO" believer on the thread!!!
Same old Perry, same old shenanigans...

I realized if I would have made it to the next page then you already posted a video :grinning-face-with-sweat:

I appreciate it! I welcome you back as well, let the journey begin!

Heck yeah brother, lets roll!!! Should be fun times seeing this little nano stuffed full of acros!

I agree its looking good so far! Iv been looking at different approaches to keeping my acros happy, so for sure following along so I can maybe incorporate any suggestions into my new system.

Nano tanks full of sticks are always the coolest, I found a deal on a 5ft long 90 gallon so snatched it on up

Baseline for color, a few of my favorites to keep a close eye on.
Greg Hillers Aquamarine Jewel, a gem indeed, and a throwback to early 2000's. My baseline color is fairly muted, browned/greyed out, under t5, give me 3 weeks!!!

Perry's Purple Snow- Originally Bacon's Purple Snow, he got out, lost the colony, so I kept the same name. This beauty will go pearl in the base, with crazy purple corralites and polyps.

I got Aris Avalance back too, will post a Baseline pic, it too greyed out, so a good time for a starting point pic.

Ahh,
Thank You and very much agree on the topic of discussion regarding probiotic/holistic approach, or should I say, lack thereof. I stand on the hill of the microbiome, shouting to the world, stoked that anyone listens, lol... The concepts are very much involved here, the tank is still young, and the program has fast tracked this 4 month wet system to support and color acros. Must be something to it. I typically would NEVER recommend acros in this timeframe, nor in this small of a system, but I had to put my money where my mouth was, and give it a go. This is seriously a challenge!
As far as my bulb choice, I like a 50/50 look, but opted for 2xABS, 3xB+, and 1xP+ With the SB Reef light bar, this covers all spectrums and overlaps, so I feel confident that I should be able to get both color and growth. I would love 8 bulbs.
Perry I would love to see your point of view on these aquabiomics test results that Telegraham and others have submitted. Was thinking about purchasing some more probiotic sources but now I am scratching my head. Zeobak users seem to swear by the stuff, but the test results seem very alarming…

I think the folks that swear on the Zeobak culture, tend to use their stones. Not sure of exactly why, but I have me suspicions. Either way, I tend to believe it to be a nitrifying bacteria, this could have to do with the culture test. My plight, is of a "PRO" standpoint, whether it be in gardening, my personal health, or the reef, incidentally, lacto seems to be a common culture amongst the three. That said, my suspicions are that the bulk of what the coral needs comes from polyp feeding, this aligns with a "driving a probiotic environment" mentality. So, using a sterile approach, and using "ANTI" products, in all 3 microbiomes, seems detrimental, from a health standpoint, if nothing less, this approach seems to destroy the good, the bad, and the ugly. Driving health and vitality, seems to strengthen the coral, which makes the coral less palatable to nuisance and pests.
This mentality, the chosen path for my health, soil, and reef, is about becoming a servant to the system, and being their to accommodate the needs of each, supplying them with key nutrients, minerals, trace, etc. I am of a belief that the water column does not dictate the needs of the coral, it's instead the microbiome delivering those needs and requirements when called upon. That said, this is exactly how the microbiome works with plants, their root exudates, and the soils microbiome... FASCINATING

In the end, I think the cultures of probiotic bacteria are likely derived from a yeast type culture, heck, smell a bottle of Pro Bio S, smells just like the culture of yeast for making sour dough. In fact, I would be almost willing to bet, that Kombucha culture would benefit the reef too, hmm..... oh goodness, something new to try, lol

Let's have some fun, shall we?
Topic: Circadia Rythm
In the world of gardening, surfing, sun gazing, meditation(lightwork/breathwork), exercise, and barefoot lifestyle, I have been grateful to have realized how POWERFUL the Sun is. Not only the connections above have opened, but the concepts of how reef keeping and the reef's microbiome tie in. We know the sun is what powers photosynthesis, but what if the sun's angle, placement, duration, at any given time of year, is exactly tied into the same very Circadia Rythm that dictates plants and animals lifecycle. Another words, if the Sun, on December 21, the Winter Solstice, is the shortest day of the year, and the longest day of the year, six months prior, June 21st, then it is suffice to say the these are equal and opposite days. If the Spring marks the beginning of the season, and the equal opposite, the Fall, marks the ending, it may be concluded that these season shifts, locally, also tap in to this pattern or rythm.
Understanding how plant cycles work, led a deeper connection and understanding of nutrient uptake in the microbiome of the soil. So, in the Spring, typically perennial plants, come out of dormancy from the slow sun, cold temps, and season- ending Sinese. With nutrient uptake, this triggers the plant to begin to utilize mainly nitrogen to feed the ensuing growth, triggered by showers (Spring), and a shifting of the Sun angle to accommodate the building of a new season. The Sun, and its shift to a longer gradual building day, the temperature of the soil and air, weather, all contribute to an UNSEEN phenomenon that also carries over to animals equally. Pollen begins in the oncoming and outgoing season, to inform us of these changes. Nature now shows us the power of the unseen, the unknown, the unquantifiable and unmeasurable. This sort of takes a true connection to get. Realizing that our gut, in the world of health, actually mirrors our micro environment, and the soils microbiome, now further deepens the impact of the Sun locally. What if the nutrient uptake and the metabolic rate of plants, animals, and yes, humans are further tapped in to this same rythm?
The summer peaks on the Summer Solstice, and triggers the lovely world of botany, that if it flowers or fruits in the summer ending or fall, that the plants shifts from nitrogen uptake to phosphorous uptake as the building of the said flower or fruits begin. The late summer brings a warmer sun, typically the color shifts to Auburn, and the leaves on the tree begin to show protection in the form of orange and red leaves, another indicator that the season is fading. The plant continues to utilze phosphorous, calling on the microbiome to utilze it versus nitrogen. The microbiome has nitrogen, but reserves it in the system for other plants tied into the same very microbiome may require it. This all being said, what if the same template actually was applied to the reefs microbiome, and the way the coral uptakes nutrients, given the coral is a photosynthetic hybrid, shouldn't the plant ascpects of the hybrid species hold true? So, are we mismanaging our reef by not trying to manipulate the same very annual shifts? Are we adjusting our nutrient protocol, our temps, the light schedule, the moon schedule accordingly? Is there a benefit?
Since the microbiome of the soil, is driven by biology, mainly bacteria and fungai(mycellia), what if the microbiome was also tied into the circadia rythm, and the temperature triggers the plant on what to consume? I think it would be safe to say, that when you dive into the wonderful world of regenerative gardening, utilizing permaculture tech, the gateway of knowledge speaks to you, if you are in a place to receive. See, we cannot test for this, but what if we could? What if the phenomenon of our everchanging nutrient availabilty was actually on reserve, awaiting for the reefs microbiome to communicate back these needs? Could we be chasing our tail, trying to play God with our ecosystem? Do the corals have a lifecycle or growing season and a time where they intuitively build for what ALL LIFE forms do? What is that you ask?
REPRODUCTION!!! SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST!!! PROCREATION!!!
What if the coral, utilizes nitrogen in the Spring, more so than in the Fall, and utilizes Phosphorous more in the Fall than Spring, could we be missing a key pattern? Could we be mismanaging not only light cycles, but also feeding cycles, are we missing healthy microbiomes spawning, not seen by us, but happening without indication? Could this be imbedded into the DNA of the coral? Finally, I leave you with this.... Could RTN and STN be triggered by the mismanagement of the Circadia Pattern, and how we are missing the unspoken language of the corals? And..... Wouldn't it be appropriate to have a season for propagating, and passing on the holobiont bacteria, and all contents to another reefer, a moral obligation for our future fragment success?
Reef on Nerds, I will be doing my best to try and bring these observations forward, and I have so much more to share, hopefully in time, I can articulate. All the best!!!

Oh, we have only started with the influence of the Sun, next, we need to review the nocturnal side, the animalistic aspects of the hybrids. The moon, in the wonderful world of water, is equally powerful to the same patterns, obviously.... LOL

Hello,
Let's discuss this little nano, where it's at, problems, solutions, observations, good, bad, and the ugly, we discuss it all with this Nano Acro Reef.

Recent Update: I pulled the sand, and decided to scrub the rocks, they were covered in hair algae, corals doing ok, they were beginning to show downward trends, so a decision needed to be made regarding the reef. Keep it, or discontinue-
Times are weird, and with the economy struggling, I was considering breaking down the reef, and shelfing the You-Tube channel. With AI rising as a star, I can see where the technology could easily coach, mentor, educate, and even customize each user's system for complete automation. Heck, AI could easily replace me and my channel, am I spinning my wheels? So, I thought, why, why are you doing this? Are we addicted to reefing at this point, or SM clicks and likes? Is this about a monetary opportunity or a hobby? What is the End Game with Acropora Reefing? In this, I realized that what I have, AI needs to feed it's informational pipeline, as well as yours, and all others who choose to share information, pictures, and private details regarding their approach/system. I chose to continue, and from there, I broke SEVERAL rules of keeping Acropora, in this, I knew my decision on what my next move in reefing was! My mission, is to prove, that the hobby is really about you, me, and the guy down the street with blue light peering from his living room window... A collective group of like minded people, sharing a passion and desire to keep animals plucked from their homes, far away, in glasss box. My vision is clear, as well as why I am here in this community, the Acropora Keeping community. To share :)
Breaking the Rules: From the moment I decided to move forward, I raced towards recovery. The reef was covered with hair, the corals were sort of greying out, losing luster, the shine if you will. I knew immediately that I was alk/ca deficient, just in appearance, but the empty bottles of A&B and Salifert confirmed what my eyes saw. 5.3dkh... What I did next would really upset most stability pushing folks, because I did the opposite! In one day, starting at 5am, ending at 8pm at night, I took the sand out and converted to bare bottom. I also removed everything from the sump, except skimmer and a sock of carbon. Why? N03 leaching, from rock that had been in play for around 6 years in my care, that was never really addressed or corrected, and simply plagued each system there on out. Now, I then took all rocks outside, with acros mounted on them mind you, in the sun, and scrubbed the tar out of them. I then put them back in the reef that had no sand, added more saltwater, did a late day water change, went to bed, and called it...
Next morning, the tank looked amazing, corals that caught in the brushing looked upset, but otherwise, success! Now, it has been 2 weeks, I completely overhauled my reef, reset, reset parameters, changed my approach/philosophy, and broke all the rules with stability and acro sensitivity. I even decided to switch from BRS A&B to TMAFR. The tank received a large water change, this was also key in helping to reduce the opportunistic uglies. Now, I have a healthy, thriving barebottom system, where using a 100 micron sock, I can keep the sump crystal clear and clean, siphon all detritus gathering in the reef, turkey baste, scrub as needed, and rapid removal. The sock is cleaned daily for now. So, a lazy reef approach, no socks, to a super clean OCD style transition as well, again proving that there are absolutely no absolutes!
Final Thoughts: I have learned and will always strive to continue to learn, it is what gets me going for the hobby, as well as all other hobbies of mine. See, there are no "Masters", "Specialists", "Experts" in this game, or the game of TRUE life and creation. We are lucky enough to have the time here and even luckier to be able to pass that information or code along. Those who wish to profit, at the expense of Acropora will always learn a very grave lesson, don't F-A-F-O... I have been at this long enough to know that these animals as well as all creations have special gifts, and to think we are the most intelligent species, just take a peek into the micro-biome, you will soon learn that this micro-biome has an intelligent design that leaves me wondering who is really running the game...
The End
