My 6th tang is going through copper right now. Sorry for the bad picture, he is camera shy and lightning fast.

As many know, I have 25 tangs and I stocked them in order of temperament and the plan has worked. Do they squabble occasionally- Of course they do but they never strike each other or cause injury. I have no secret to having so many other than maintaining good water quality and best diet possible.
Those who have seen my tank in person say the tank is well balanced with fish and the behavior is unbelievable with over 40 fish in the tank.

What are the measurements of your tank? I have a 84x36x29 tank I will be setting up but as a peninsula with rocks in the middle. Wouldn’t that dramatically increase the number of fish you could keep with the added swim area?

As others have said, it depends on the temperament of the individual fish. I have / few in a 200 gal:

Sailfin 8”
PBT 6”
Tomini 3”
Blonde Naso 6”
Convict 4”
Achilles 5”

Had a purple that was the worst fish I have ever kept in more than 20 years. Had to rehome him. The sailfin is definitely king but he is most interested in the 3 pyramids I also have.

190 with filtration included. 180 just the tank
Ah, mines a 125 six foot. All my tangs hang out on one side of the tank except for my kole. She has her cave on the other side. Its super weird. My clowns, butterfly, angel and trigger all chill on that side of the tank with them!

Assure the convict you get is eating and best as a first tang by itself to get it comfortable and eating. There has been an array of issues with them from Sr Lanka where they look good but never truly eat and wither away suggesting they may be cyanide captured.
Any other concern this list may have? Thank you.

Darn I'm vested in this question now...

I'm considering the following 2-3" in my build

Achilles
Purple
2x Yellow
Gem
Yellow eye kole
White tail
Sailfin
Convict
Powder blue

Tank is 72" x 24" x 29"... with sump it's 300g system.

I do have a 96" x 36" x 30" 400g that I can eventually move bigger fish into... again these are all going at the same time as 3" juveniles... but I was also assuming not all would survive to adults as this is the sad reality of the hobby. This thread is making me doubt the plan tho :$
I added all of mine at the same time when I started my build.

Gem
Achilles
Sohal(since been removed, very aggressive)
Desjardini
Purple
Powder blue

They are all doing well in my 7 foot build. All together cuts down big time on the aggression as no one will have territory to defend.

No- just keep in mind potential growth rates and stock in order of aggression with the most to be aggressive last

I have three in my 5' 130 gal tank along with a Foxface. A White Tail and baby Yellow were added first with an adult PB going in last. Done with larger fish at this point.

Three. I have Purple Tang, Lipstick Tang and Tomini Tang in the same (Reefer 625 G2) without issues. Also a Rabbit Foxface, Copperband Butterfly and Lemon Dwarf Angel and half a dozen smaller tank mates.

2-3 has always been the most in my current 200g but I also have a lot of rock and other fish. My purple eventually drove my yellow belly insane and it figured out a way to jump to its death. Later added a powder blue that stood up to the purple and things were good for a number of years until it passed. Was going to try, here recently, adding another PB but the fish just was not very healthy and fortunately died during guarantee. Have a replacement coming tomorrow and going to try again. When it goes to tank it's going to spend some time in acclimation box to be sure full strength before introducing with very territorial purple.
