I recently lost my yellow tang. She was great and she crushed algae, but she's gone and I don't think I want to get another tang. I have a 90-gallon that is just over 5 months old.

What do you all keep in your tanks to keep algae under control w/o tangs? Urchins? CUC?

I'm lookin for some suggestions.

Thanks!

i cant think

I use;
Siganus magnificus
Pincushion Urchins
A variety of Snails
Sometimes a Blenny

Urchins, snails, foxface, dwarf angel, cowries, limpets,....I have a range of different things lol.
This is basically my exact plan. I have a blue tuxedo and foxface on the way from Dr. Reef along with a small CUC and a banded coral shrimp. Considering adding a Flame Angel to the order. The Flame has been my target fish since I started planning the tank, so I will get one eventually, but I don't know if now is the right time or not...

a good cuc will do it. Urchins and trochus and maybe a turbo, some conch for the sand. Female emeralds are good for larger annoying stuff.

I've found Rabbitfish to be great at eating algae, including bubble. Very docile fish.
That's great to hear! I'm excited to get my Foxface from Dr. Reef in a few weeks. I want to keep aggression at a minimum in my little ecosystem, so it's good to hear you're not seeing any aggression

Another vote for foxface. Mine destroyed a whole outbreak of bubble algae within about a week. I have zero (visible) hair or bubble algae anymore. Lots of LFS keep them in their coral tanks for algae management.

I've had one in my display that has been great, loves nori too. With the good luck there I got some one spot foxfaces, also from Dr. Reef, for some frag tanks. No more bubble algae.

FYI, I've seen some comments recently about Dr. Reef, positive and negative. My recent experience has been great. Communication was a problem in the past that has been a plus recently.

Urchin
Tons of hermit crabs
One lonely trochus
Cheato in the refugium
Manual removal if any pops up in the tanks after some neglect.

My tank is not big enough for a tang to keep happy and have enough swimming space.
