I know it's been discussed over and over but wanted to add my 2c to new reefers.
I've been in the hobby right at two years and played the game of no qt the whole time. It finally got me and lost a coral beauty, kole tang, black cap, and flame angel to ich. I treated with kick ich with fingers crossed for a month. Just added two new clowns, powder brown and fairy wrasse, and boom ich in two days. So today I pulled all my rocks work and coral just to catch them all so I could put them in qt with copper treatment.
Pain in the butt, so take it from me...QT those new fish!

Everyone has different levels of acceptable risk. I'm in the minority but I do 30+ days of observation and only medicate if I see symptoms. I've been through velvet so I know the risks. I follow the protocol but still had unexplained deaths when I QTed every fish with copper proactively so I stopped.

Took me 2 years to heed the warning, hopefully my experience will guide a new reefer to make the right choice!
I thought I could know if a fish was healthy just by looking at it. one had velvet and completely wiped my tank

I've never quarantined. Mainly because of the difficulty obtaining fish medicine in the UK. I've had no problems, but then I haven't added anything in over a year (and the fish I bought when first setting up are all still alive and kicking).

I have a beautiful hippo tang, and a Singapore angel that I've had for almost 2 1/2 years - and I'm now terrified of introducing anything nasty. So I guess I'd better try and source some meds so I can QT from now on.

Or buy pre QT
Still not a guarantee.

The best way is diy.

I didn't qt for about 3 years and came home with 4 new fish. 2 bullied to death by my clowns and 2 had ick. Whole tank got it and had to cram 6 fish into a 20 gallon. They all survived qt and fallow.
Been qt since. At minimum a 2 week observation or at most full qt up to 6 weeks.

Sheesh... What a pain. I also have never QT, mainly because I have just a few fish that came from the same places, but I will be in the future. When I upgrade and have more space to add fish, my current setup will be a QT.

I also haven't qt. But now that I'm planning to stock a 180g is am really debating it. I think my 2 clowns are safe. They have survived a very dark time. No sickness popped up when they went a week with no food. Water changes once every couple of months. Not refilling rodi water and salinity jumping super high and still nothing. When I decided to get the clowns home right it made me want a better home for them insert upgrade. 20241119_203643.jpg
I have a hanna Copper checker just need reagents. Still have copper power from years ago I never used. So instead of 5-7 fish at a time maybe I try 2 or 3 at a time

I’ve since set up a proper QT tank and everything, but I used to just have what was essentially an observation tank. Kept new fish on their own, in tank water taken from my display, and watched them for a week or so. Mainly to make sure they were eating ok and for obvious issues. Maybe something like that would work for you until you can source medications?

I'll probably do that. Though my tank is lightly stocked, I'm in no hurry to add any fish - but I recently lost my Sally Lightfoot crab, and I'm down to my last shrimp, things you can't copper anyway.
