I have a flame hawk I have had for a few years. Any advice on pairing it up with a second one?

They are a fun fish with lots of personality. While mine perches all over he particularly loves this large cabbage coral.

Just got my flame hawk from Live Aquaria yesterday! He's still getting used to the QT tank right now, haven't really seen him eat yet. This guy is great so far, though. He's rooming with 2 snowflake clowns and a yellow prawn goby right now. I find him resting on the powerhead, on the temp probe wire, by the airstone, hopefully he's happy.

He ate some frozen today, so that makes me happy. I love how his eyes dart around and then locks in on you. My yellow prawn goby is a pig. My 2 snowflake clowns don't seem that interested in eating much. Worries me

Size is everything. Tiny is female. XXL is male.

Medium is total guesswork.

Use an acclimation box for the second fish.
Be prepared to remove the second fish from the tank. [emoji53]

I've read get two tiny ones and it will happen. Do they change sex like clowns?

They do but in the opposite way. Dominant becomes Male instead of female.

Thanks I will look for a small one. It seams like they are all the same size (large) when I see them.

I'm not sure entirely what you are asking. But my hawkfish perches anywhere. No issues with flow. He perches on top of the power head next to my feed cup during frozen feeding time.

@wallace what are you using for a powerhead now? Tell me a little about your tank. Can you post a list of your livestock here?

In nature they are found in sps branches, so can handle quite a bit of flow.

I agree with @eatbreakfast. They are very often a nice addition to a tank with community fishes but they are not reef safe with some invertebrates like snails and hermit crabs. Which is very much a bummer.

They can't eat snails and have a difficult time hunting hermit crabs, but small shrimp and small crabs(think pom poms).

My small Long Nose will go after my peppermint shrimps if they are out in the open during day light. He only pecks at them because they are not small.

Considering getting a couple of flame hawks, but wondering about the not reef safe bit, when it says they eat Inverts what are we talking about? I have loads of hermits, turbos, conches, cleaner shrimps and peppermints that keep aiptasia at bay, some of these are pretty big as well. Are they going to have a banquet or do you think I’d be ok?

Small shrimp like sexy shrimp? Can they pick the legs off hermit crabs? You would think if that was possible few people would be able to keep hermits.
