Yeah, I felt really bad for the mantis. It was in a little critter carrier with no sand under reef lights. At the LFS she was pretty lethargic but really came to live when I gave her a proper tank.

$25 is a great price. I've seen a couple around DFW for $40. Just be prepared for what they bring in to not be a Odontodactylus scyllarus. "Peacock" is the go to name for a bunch of the smaller mantis.

My empty tank made me sad so I picked up a new Peacock from Pet Supplies and Fish Supplies at That Fish Place - That Pet Place. A friend lives in the area and this is his favorite LFS. Based on his recommendation I was pretty confident they would send me an actual peacock. I was not disappointed!

Woah! What a beauty! I'm feeling that itch again. I have a 30 cube shallow that has top down mantis tank written all over it. Who's done that before? Mantis volcano tank? Lol

Nice find! Do you know where it came from? It's not O. Scyllarus for sure.

What color are the meral spots?

Possibly N. wennerae, N. bredini, G. viridis. Something along those lines.

Check Roy's List and see if you can match up the characteristics.

See if you can find out where he got live rock from. If it's a hitchhiker then it's possibly N. wennerae from gulf live rock.

The meral spots are right above the smashing appendages. If the mantis is looking straight at you the meral spots will be facing you. They flare them out while making threat displays. Kind of like our elbows but upside down.

See the purple spots with the white rings in this pic? That's the meral spots. It's a big help when tying to figure out mantis species.

O. scyllarus? Watch liveaquaria diver's den and bluezooaquatics. Small ones are hard to find. Usually 4+ inches. If I ever find an O. scyllarus less than 3 inches for sale I'm all over it. I've only ever seen one under 3 inches for sale. I saw pics of one about an inch and a half and it's now one of my life's goals to have one. Lol
