The Wrasse Lover's Thread!

Really sad day today. My absolutely stunning large supermale pinstripe wrasse passed away last night. Had been eating like a pig, happy as can be for as as long as I've had him (many months now) but after a normal happy weekend from him, yesterday he was pent up in his cave even with food out, and today I found his body in that same spot. Almost certainly natural because of old age, no aggression, healthy signs all around, etc., but regardless, he's passed on. It's been a hard day, I loved that fish to death and he was the star of my tank, but it's part of the hobby in some ways.

Trying to help distract myself from the loss by thinking about a replacement for him. Tank is a 65 display with ample rockwork, and the only other wrasse is a blue star leopard wrasse. Despite being devastated with this loss today, hopefully whatever follows will bring its own kind of joy in the future. Thanks in advance everyone <3
Sorry to hear about your loss, never a good time... In time you will find another Wrasse, that will help replace him in its own way.

In a big debate in my mind which wrasses I should add, debating Splendid Pintail, Mystery wrasse, Black Leopard, Golden Rhomboidalis, Ruby Longfin...... I have 425XL. with A blue Star Leopard, Pink-streaked. In tank currently, Blue Tang, Randall's Assessor, 3 Yasha gobies. Leaning Splendid, Rhomboidalis. and then black leapord
Either the splendid pintail do you mean C. isosceles or C. lancoelatus? If you mean Lanceolatus then I’m pretty sure they are unavailable to this hobby.

Cirrhilabrus isosceles
If you want colour to vary some more then I’d stick to these three;
Black Leopard (M. negrosensis)
Splendid Pintail (C. isosceles)
Golden Rhomboid (C. rhomboidalis)

The mystery will get aggressive and assuming your tank is 4’ or larger, you can have a Parachrilinus species for the nice red hues.

My McCosker's has started swimming in tight circles facing slightly downwards. From the searches I did it appears to be a swim bladder issue. In those searches I didn't see any kind of treatment options, are there any? Or do I just keep feeding frozen Brine, Spirulina Mysis, and pellets and hope? It started last night and he was still eating at the time. So far all other fish are acting normally and no one appears to be picking on him.

I don't have a QT but I do have an empty 20g tank and could try (I buy pre-QT from Dr Reef since I don't trust myself to monitor the ammonia and top off regularly).

Do you have a lid? If so what is it made from?

I do it is egg crate. I saw people talking about spinal injuries in the searches but it seemed that the consensus was that showed circling while facing upwards mostly. Do you think that is more likely? I know it's recommended to have a screen top but I couldn't get one to fit tightly so went with egg crate instead to make sure there were no gaps.

It’s potentially a Spinal Injury issue or the Wrasse Disease that went under the radar for so long as it was believed it be a Spinal Injury.
If you have a photo and video of him then you could start a thread in disease/treatment as Jay and the other guys have some great experiences with many diseases

I'm at work right now but I will try to get a video of him when I get home and I'll post over there once I do. Thank you for the help so far.

My first wrasse, a carpenteri is in qt 50l together with a small foxface. They are eating happily but the wrasse keeps diving at the foxface in what seems like agressive moves. The foxface is pretty chill but i was under the impression that carpenteris are calm wrasses?
Normal?

Beautiful Carpenter's! I wish I could find one this nice. Definitely weird behavior from your description, but I also doubt it's actually aggression? Can't really picture what you're describing though, admittedly

Is the wrasse showing brighter colours when he dives?
If so then it is relatively normal and just doing what flashers do best… flash and display at any reason they can find!

Since the foxface seems relatively undisturbed by it that seems reasonable.
Difficult for me to judge colors in his current qt bucket

Hello all, I posted this in its own tread and suggested I post here as I do enjoy wrasses. Any suggestings on wrasses that are reef safe ?

Currently I have a 75gal. There is
1 foxface
2 clowns
1 firefish
2 court jester gobies
2 pistol shrimp gobies (they stay under a rock and only appear for food)
1 pistol shrimp
1 cleaner shrimp
3 peppermint shrimp
Various corals
Had a naoko wrasse i loved but kept picking on foxface and lost the battle. Is it worth trying another or is that a common incident? Looking for a few good adds, maybe another fish thats about the size of a foxface also? Suggestions and reasons appreciated

That's crazy. My new McCoskers started doing the exact same thing in QT on the exact same day yours did. Same exact issues you describe. Its now been doing it for like 3 days and seems to get better/worse depending on how amped up the fish gets. When it is calm, it is able to maintain more swimming control. when it gets excited, it like goes into over-load mode and loses all control. It seems to be able to maintain some level of control when it is calm, but as soon as I add food to the tank it goes crazy and then loses control and just starts flailing around the tank bumping into everything. it can't control it's body position and just rolls upside down and every which direction bumping into everything.
It is still exhibiting a strong feeding response and desire to eat though. it is still able to feed a little. it grabs whatever bits of food it manages to bump into. Really Really strange how it was completely fine for over 2 weeks and then just out of the blue, starts exhibiting these issues.

it doesn't look good for this guy and at this point, I think I might be giving up on the hopes of adding a flasher wrasses, just too many unknown issues with them lately.

My wrasse came from an online vendor, but it was drop shipped via Quality Marine out of Los Angeles CA.
It showed up looking good and was fine for 2+ weeks and then over just a few hours could no longer control it's movements/swimming and does not appear to have any injuries. really strange.

I wasn't able to get a video last night but I did just reply to a thread in the diseases forum where others are exploring the cause of what seems to match. My McCosker came from Dr Reef and was QTd before I got him. So it was fine for 5ish weeks for that and 2.5 weeks in my tank before symptoms showed up

Cirrhilabrus naokoae isn’t known for going at other fish. They’re known for aggression however not towards non-wrasse fish.
Mine doesn’t go at my other wrasses either, maybe due to him being the smallest in the tank but even then, my Indo Lubbock is rather close in size.

What are you most interested in wrasses for? Pest hunting? Displaying?

Well I added couple of new wrasses to tank and Splendid Pintail, and a Carpenters. Both are shy overtime. I try to sneak up and take Picks.. I need one of the Splendid, It doesn't appear to be the one I pick in Divers Den,
