The Wrasse Lover's Thread!

I’m open to some thoughts, now I’ve managed to come into possession of a 3’x16”x13.5” tank (25 gallons) and would love some thoughts on wrasses. So far ideas have been;
- Pseudocheilinops ataenia and/or Wetmorella spp. trio
- Something from Rubriventralis Complex
- Choats Leopard Wrasse

Would love what you guys would go for and some ideas!

Trying a trio of pseudocheilinops or wetmorella in a 25g is risky since they can’t be sexed... but I do know who I’m talking to lol

Cirrhilabrus naokoae isn’t known for going at other fish. They’re known for aggression however not towards non-wrasse fish.
Mine doesn’t go at my other wrasses either, maybe due to him being the smallest in the tank but even then, my Indo Lubbock is rather close in size.

What are you most interested in wrasses for? Pest hunting? Displaying?
Mostly display, and from what ive exp and read they are fun to watch

Haha, and, most of the time when they come in they’re young juveniles which is most likely when they’re female.
Knowing how well my luck with wrasses has been so far I may get just a bit more lucky.

Definitely! Mine has never gone at another fish unless he was displaying.
Usually in the form of “divebombing”.

I had a Naoko's awhile back that killed Ruby long fins an a Blue star Leopard,, Never saw it go after another's in tank, it did leave Yellow Coris, and Flameback alone

It went for the Ruby Long Fin as they’re both of them are if the same complex and very similar body shapes.

Hey All, looking for some advice on adding a few Reef Safe Wrasses to my 70 gallon display. Current stock is just a pair of clowns, but will be adding a White Tail Bristle Tooth Tang and most likely a royal Gramma. I would like to add a few wrasses.

I would like something that would go with a Melanarus Wrasse as I had one in my old tank for many years.
Possibilities:
- Carpenter Wrasse
- Excuisite Wrasse
- Leopard Wrasse
- McCoskers Wrasse
- LubbocksFairy Wrasse
- Orange-Back Fairy Wrasse
- Red Head Solon Fairy Wrasse

Looking to add 2-3 along with the Melanarus. Any advice on which above would pair well would be great.

What are the dimensions?
It’ll be much easier to say whether flashers are a good choice or not.

For the red/orange color I would consider a splendid pintail (C. isosceles) or hooded flame wrasse which I think ReefPro has on sale.

36x24x22 I believe. Honestly I will take any advice on what to add with a melanaurs. I chose those ones as I am trying to make most of my purchases through dr reefs quarantined fish.

Is a bicolor blenny more likely to be aggressive towards a royal gramma than an orchid dottyback? My impression is that their aggression is driven more by shape and behavior than by color but I thought I'd double check. I personally like both fish, and I'd be terribly upset if I got one and my blenny decided to kill it.

The dottyback seems a bit more likely to stand up for itself (tankmates will be the blenny, a springer's damsel, and clowns). But I don't want to put too much aggression in my tank, and the royal gramma has a much better reputation for playing nice, though I know aggression can happen in almost any species. I think I've got enough rockwork for another territory, but either way I should probably get one of them in soon, before the blenny or damsel decide that the entirety of my rockwork belongs to them.

Love my wrasses new addition is the gold nugget the peacock took a dislike to it and it went into hiding again but recently appeared again and the peacock has shown no interest now.

Love the gold nugget, been seeing quite a few of these lately at various LFS's.

Since I can't seem to get a hold of a chaoti, might have to try the gold nugget as my next leopard.
Xenojulis margaritaceus is stunning but you should definitely wait to see a mature male. They really show some nice colouring.

Im still thinking of wrasses for this tank… The painful thing is that there are hundreds of species haha.

I have a friend who has an adult male, absolutely stunning for sure!

Just never really considered one as I have been wanting a chaoti for a few years now. Seeing as I can't seem to get a hold of one(I will not order fish, I need to see them in person before I purchase. Just how I am), and there have been several gold nuggets floating about, it might be my next one.

Have to make the couple hour trip to the LFS this morning for food, so if they have one, it might be coming home with me.

Fingers crossed they have one!

I think by now we all know how much I love my leopards.......

SO I would add a pair of chaoti's, negrosensis, a blue star, and an ornate. Then mottle in a couple flashers(carpenters comes to mind), or a hooded flame(expensive as all get out), then a couple fairies.

Not much help, I know. sorry. lol

We are enablers after all. :D

I’d love to know what their max size actually is as I may end up considering one for the 3’x16”x1’ tank

I may try find a Negrosensis and a Choati now that I think about it.
I’m also considering trying a trio of Pink Streaks (Still on the edge on how much I want to truly risk my luck with Wrasses).
