I saw a whole herd of Yellows from the shore and had a group of 7 or 8 Achilles use me as protection from a sea turtle. Also saw a couple of Snowflake eels and an octopus. LOTS of Convict tangs and Sergeant Major Damsels - even several pairs with schools of babies.

I'm planning to find a way to smuggle a small yellow out. If I can catch a convict, I might have to start a new upgrade!

Headed there (Honolulu) in January for awhile. Haven’t done any snorkeling in the past but would like to this trip. Do you go through a company or just go out on your own?

Uh if you count being deployed for the wildfires going with a company…

I always book everything for myself. I think @Stang67 does the company route

We go out multiple times a year and I usually get wrapped up playing golf and never snorkel. Family lives in Pearle City, so I’m sure he knows where to snorkel. Or can find out and can just wade out and do it for free!

@Jasonak gave me some good suggestions as well before I went.

Ive been very fortunate and been able to go to hawaii every year for last 10 or so years. We bounce between maui and big island. If your staying in or around Kona this is a a awesome place to visit. Its private and gated has restrooms showers etc.Paved trail down to beach from parking lot. first part has nice lagoon area that is kinda like a kiddy pool area, very protected. If you swim out through the opening at far side on the left.( you can get through on right also at high tide) its a excellent snorkeling area thats very protected, crystal clear water. If you walk past the small lagoon area (which can get kinda busy) and keep walking towards your right. Theres a small trail through rocky area that leads you over to where you'll see lifeguards and kayaks lounge chairs etc. These dudes all work for the home owners in this private subdivision. Your not allowed to use any chairs and they dont rent anything out. But no one is ever on the beach over there, its called Kukio beach. Except turtles and the occasional seal you'll have 1/4 mile of white sand beach to yourself,,,ok there might be one or two people over there. but its pretty nice. Decent snorkeling all out front of this area also. Just little more tricking finding spot to come in and out of the water. :)
The area just past the lagoon area on your left is also nice there's some grassy aeras with shade etc.
Name of the place is Kikaua point. They only allow 25 cars in at a time. So need to get there kinda early before 9am. If its full you can always wait someone is normally always leaving.

Its free to enter and park. Its about 20 minute drive from Kona.

You dont need to pay anyone to do amazing snorkeling in hawaii. The place I told you about is a great beach day place. Good snorkeling beautiful beach and not crowded. Theres a place called two step thats really cool for snorkeling only (no beach). Very deep at points. But I swam with dolphins there until I was bored....I know im way jaded LOL The dolphins are not always there ive heard best time is in the morning but the day I swam with them it was around 10-11 am This is a great place but gets super busy getting in and out of the water as there is only one entrance.
Theres a book/app called Hawaii revealed, they do all the islands each one has its own book. Its very good I wore it out when I first started going over.
Waikoloa is kind of off by itself. There's allot of areas around there for snorkeling also. I havent spent a ton of time up there as its a ways from Kona which is where I normally stay.

I was snorkeling right off the beach on Molokai and saw all kinds of fish. Best part of that trip was it was a work trip for my husband and I tagged along so hotel was paid by company
