I’m getting a frag of this lovely birdsnest tomorrow and was wondering if anyone had recommendations for best lighting for this particular type? We have 3 Kessil a360WE about 10” from the surface and my top rock structure is probably about 15” mid level in 180gal 6’x2’x2’ TIA...would that be best or should I put it lower?

It’ll grow pretty much anywhere. It’s an easy, beginner type of coral.

These are easy corals that do not need a lot of light, but can take a lot of light. a360 is not a powerful light to handle a 2x2' area on it's own, so I would keep it more directly under the light instead of having it off to the side.

TRUTH! A single Kessil will not be enough light for a 2’x2’ tank IF you want to run higher end SPS. How do I know? I ran my single Kessil A360WE at 100% Power, 50% color and was getting major shadowing and low PAR issues with SPS 12” deep or deeper. I ended up switching lights to get higher par and better spread. If you are going with SPS high and LPS/softies below, you’ll be good. In the pic you can see the Birdsnest doing great under the Kessil but the Acro is not.

There are 3 of the Kessils and they’re the wide spread ones or whatever they’re called lol

Like I said we have THREE Kessils and the tank is not 2’ x 2’ it’s 6 foot by 2 foot by 2 foot

I think they understand it not a 2'by2' tank, but that is what your dimensions are per light since your running 3 of them every 2'

I get it. Each Kessil is doing 2x2x2, right? I am assuming that you spread them out equally? This is not a lot of light, but if you keep the birdsnest more directly under the light up higher, it will be fine. Just avoid the edges and down lower with Kessils alone since they are not powerful lights at all.

I guess we didn't know that about the Kessils. We sat our tank up 10 months ago and the man we purchased our aquarium from has owned his own business for over 30 years and said these were some of the best to get and would work for all of our needs. All our coral seem to be thriving....but do you think we should add more lighting? And if so what and how many?

BRS has a good video of PAR values for the Kessil. Being a former Kessil owner, I loved the lights and if I were to supplement them, I’d 100% go with T5 for increased PAR and reduced shading. Your corals will EXPLODE with supplemental T5 and you’ll still get that amazing Kessil shimmer you can’t get with other lights. I couldn’t afford T5 supplementation so I went with a panel LED. But if I’d had unlimited funds, you can bet I’d go with Kessil/T5 combo for a killer tank.

Can you send me a link to the T5’s you are talking about? Right now we have our Kessils hanging from the ceiling...they were around $1,000 so I thought at the time we were getting the best of the best

I am working on a build that is 72"x30"x24" I will be running 4 kessil A360WE and 8 t5 bulbs (39watt) for maximum output. Got all the peices for a steal and am putting it together hybrid style...

Here is just one example of a T5/LED hybrid system. There are a few out there now in all price ranges.

So this is the Tubbs I got. Is the whitish tips a sign of previous bleaching or could that be pink under the right color spectrum?

How much of a white tip before I start to worry it’s bleaching? This spot is probably about 1/4” on just one branch.
