I bought this encrusting montipora a few months back, after a couple weeks I saw green star polyps growing on part of the rock so I broke the rock in two to seprate them. The rock is very hard, I ended up having to make a deep groove with a cutoff disc on a dremel and was finally able to split it with a chisel. Then a couple of weeks ago I noticed a bright green tunicate growing under the montipora, the coral has started growing really fast and is starting to overgrow the tunicate. Because of the cool color I'd really like to keep it from getting smothered, does anyone have any suggestions on how I can separate the two without killing them?

I'm pretty sure it isn't a sponge, here is a pic I took of it when I first noticed it. It appears to have a siphon out. The owner of my lfs was pretty sure that it was a tunicate and not a sponge also .

One idea would be to frag the monti around the tunicate with enough space to allow the tunicates to thrive. And if you can frag the tunicate our as well?

Looks like yellow sponge, very common. They have a large exhalant(?) siphon that does extend sometimes. They do not like light so let it stay in the dark.

I think it's a yellow sponge as well. Have a ton of it in my tank, they most certainly have a rather large exhalent(couldn't spell that one either and google only give me exhale) vent.
