Tuxedo urchin

Is it normal for a tuxedo urchin to loose its "spikes" ? I've had it for about 6 months now. Its been perfectly fine up until recently it started looking some of its spines. Is it dying ?

That is an ominous sign. Rule out water chemistry issues such as SG and temp as well as the basics. Next would be starvation, I supplement my urchins diet with strips of nori. Lastly urchins sometime come with parasites.
