I was thinking about your tank. Ever consider adding soft coral to your tank? Something a little less demanding. I think exploring some new coral could be fun!

Hello,

I actually have always had a mixed reef with all three and still kinda do. I have less soft than I do anything else I only have maybe 7 softies and lol they all made it. Even my rock anemone made and I was worried, since he was a hitchhiker lol

Even with the coral losses your tank still looks good to me!

Hello,

It’s definitely trying to make a come back and im doing what I can just to keep It stable and boost its health. That’s why I have waited to dose the flat worm exit because I want to make sure (since they are stressed from the move), I don’t add more stress or issues until the ecosystem has stabilized.

It is always hard to balance the microfauna and microfauna in a tank! I do prefer natural systems as much as possible but then you have an overrun of opportunistic critters that just makes you want to scrap the system and start over! Flat worms need food but I much prefer the coral!

You need a few flat worm eaters to balance the playing feild!

Hello,

Yes I agree I need flat worm eating fish. @Brew12 sent me a link for them and I can’t remeber which wrass just love to eat the little buggers. I didn’t think they would exist or populate since I run my nutrients so low. It says the main thing flatworms need is high nitrates. But mine are close to 2ppm roughly.

Not all flatworms are the same. In this case you are dealing with worms that eat coral. Nitrates don't matter for the coral eating species.

Do you mean acefw acro eating flat worms? The only place i can see them is on my soft corals. I can’t see
Them on anything else and none of my acros have had any issues (well since the move), the ones that did make it are doing very well atm. But I dipped three soft corals and they were little brown specs like seasame Seeds actually.

When running a mixed reef, do use carbon (good carbon) as softies/LPS leach chemicals that will stress out SPS

Hello,

Yeah I was sorta mislead on this topic by lfs. They said I can’t carbon dose and run carbon media. Thanks to @Brew12 and you I am able to. I am not sure how much I would need for my water volume or if I need a separate canister pump or can use media bags and put them in the sump. I don’t want an extra cord but it is what it is (plus canister pumps don’t do well with salt water and are a pain to clean.

Lots of different types of flat worms that eat corals. I wouldn't try and make any connection between nitrates and the reproduction rate of flat worms of any type.

Agreed. A media bag in a filter sock, or where you would normally put filter socks, is just fine.

I run much less than recommended because it is best to change it out every 2 or 3 weeks. You won't exhaust the carbon but it will get fouled by biological growth to make it stop functioning.

I would go with a 1/2 cup on your system unless you are trying to correct a problem, then use 1 to 1 1/2 cups.

Hello,

Can I just buy a large media bag or bags and place them in the sump? Not sure if they need to be in a reactor so the media is turbulent (or moving per day).

You don't want carbon to move so it doesn't need to be turbulent. It does need to good water flow through the media so dropping a bag on the bottom of a sump may not work. Between sump baffles is a good place if you don't use filter socks.

I rigged one with a wooden skewer through a bag of carbon. Threaded it on, trimmed the skewer to fit the walls . My tank is much smaller. Not sure if it would work for yours.

Hello,

I use filter socks before the skimmer but I can place the carbon media bags in the baffle before the return pumps. I normally have 200micro filters there to get small debris out. But I’ll remove them and put the media bags there first I can take a pic.

I had to get ready for a co workers wedding so (had to dress up lol). Probably not good idea :)

After skimmer and before return pump, best location

Hello,

Sounds like a great place to put them and I’m off to a wedding. Ahh which is odd since I was invited and thankful lol I have only known the person for three weeks at work lol. But very happy for them, and it will be a first time meeting their soon to be spouse. So did had no idea what to get them so gave them new filter socks and carbon media lol. (Just kidding just gave them money).
