i recently was trying to look on her about vertex bio pellets and i could not find anything about comparison between this brand of bio pellets and np bio pellets. so i decided to take the plunge because several online sources stated that vertex bio pellets would eliminate the need for gfo unlike np where it was recommended. i wanted to document everything. i wanted to try this because i get great growth rates for my sps but decent color.
about my tank parameter pre BP
ph 8.4
alk 8-9
cal 390-400
Nitrate 0
mg 1400 i presume tested a week prior
phos (unfortunately i dont have an accurate po4 test kit and i know its a big deal comparing np and bio pellets but hopefully i can find someone who has one soon)
salinity 1.024-1.025
i have a 90g tank with a 55g sump/ refug and a dual becket diy skimmer, a 24" tall calcium reactor and i mix kalk in with the auto top off. i am also a a recovering aefw that were caught early havent seen a nibble in a while as in months. there is a small cyano problem but only in one spot on one rock that get normally siphoned everytime i do a water change.
i have two 250wMH with xm 15k bulbs, a dart as a return pump coming out of 4X 3/4 inch ports and two koralia 4s.
i took some pictures of the coral before i add them to show color and polyp extension.
i started with 325 ml of the product. in a home made media reactor that is connected to the dart with a ball valve.
the ph droped to 8.2 24hours after
three dsays later
ph lowered to 8.2 and has stayed there
salinity and nitrate and alk and cal are still the same
on day 4 after adding bp there was some significant polyp extension on certain acros but other had the opposite effect which was weird it was mostly ora coral a red planet, oregon tort, chips, green birdnest, valida, belina all closed up.
a week later good signs some of the corals that had reduced polyp extension were back to normal or really extended and the the panope birstnest an ridicules coloration increase there was never any green just white and pink.
on day 8 today i add another ~200 ml of bio pellets ( i bought the 1000ml bag) ph is still at 8.2 the water has always been pretty crystal clear but now there is a difference its slight but its there. the stuff coming out of the skimmer is thicker and darker the usual. and the algae growing on the glass has a much slower growth rate as well as the one rock in the tank that cyano grows on. there is a milli that i have no idea what its called but looks amazing now i have never seen the polyps so extended.
