I just got a little seven gallon AIO and put it on my desk at work. I just want to keep some acans and mushrooms in there, keep it simple.
Anyway, I am trying to determine if I need an ATO. The longest we go here at work without anyone around is typically three days, on long weekends. There may be one time a year when it's four days around Christmas.
Based on my tank at home, the most evaporation I see throughout the year (winter) is about 1.8% of the water volume per day, erring on the high side. So, seeing as how this tank is covered and the one at home is not, this tank should lose ~6% of water volume over four days, being fairly safe.
So, is it as simple as just adding 6% to salinity, say 34 ppt x 1.06 = 36 ppt to determine salinity? If so it seems this swing is definitely too big... This is worst case scenario but seems like a lot. I mean I could add a bit of water before being away a few days to keep the salinity more in normal range, but the swing would stay the same.
