A nice tank could be achieve different ways it will depend on the reefer which rout to go.
Without a doubt! Shine has its place for people who don’t wanna do water changes.. I’m not against it but I actually enjoy changing water and seeing the results the next day! I think a lot of it has to do with removing the doc’s first then the elements get replenished.. I don’t think traces are as important as this generation believes they are! None of the old skool sps keepers ever talked about traces of even dosed them and still don’t to this day including me. I get some with the all for reef I use but not enough as kalk does the bulk of my lifting..

Iv been on and off reefing I came back from a 10 year drop out from the hobby and I started the new tank with Reef Moonshiners. Its been 1 year 6 month tank
I do things a little different I change water weekly to bi weekly and I run carbon in a bag with a skimmer.
I use TM Bacto Balance to keep my nutrients in check every day
Feed flake in the morning and frozen brine shrimp in the afternoon every day
Dose RM daily when I feed in the afternoon takes me like 2 minutes to dose
I run BRS 2 part and Kalk at night in a 5 gal bucket

The first 6 month of the tank was passing thru all type of problems (Dinos, Cyano) until it finally started to look better and better.

Sounds like my tank exactly besides the shine! I use all for reef cause the kalk doesn’t keep up and that’s it! My tank just turned 2 years old it’s self! I took a 10yr break myself and came back to a new hobby and new generation of reefers lol. It seems really complicated now and it shouldn’t be!

I think its the opposite now, theres way to find deficiencies in a tank with ICP or if you have a bad bacteria issue in the tank you have an idea how to work it out.
I use to run Zeovit which was good but very complicated to keep everything in check and a drop of the alk or a big raise and the tank was gone

In the lighting area I find it to be more complicated now were the LEDs are not what we were sold in the beginning, were they used the word efficiency and durability but frags take for ever to kick of these days then 10 years back

Funny you mention that! I’ve ran halides till 2 months ago I finally switched to meridians.. 90% of my coral grew extremely well but I had a few that were stubborn and didn’t kick in till I put led’s on my tank lol.. including the old school pink lemonade it wouldn’t grow under halides and in the 2 months it’s had LED’s over it, it has taken off.. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Thats the reason some of us tend to try different things we get impatient jajajajaja
Im back to T5 been a year already and my corals have great colors and decent growth
I guess some corals will grow when ever they want to 🤣 no matter what we try

I bet we could DIY FM RTN/STN X for far less for those that may want to test it.

They share the ingredients:
Water, zinc, chelators, and pyridine-2-thiol-1-oxide

Dosing zinc is easy enough on its own. Finding the last ingredient may be the harder part. @Randy Holmes-Farley any ideas?
Just get zinc pyrithione, then you have both at once.
It is the active ingredient in anti-dandruff shampoo. So apparently RTN/STN X is Head ‘n Shoulders for coral… 😉

The stuff has anti-fungal properties and some anti-bacterial.

Interestingly enough, I've seen some longer polyp extension on my acro after dosing RTN/STN 5ml a day. Not sure if there's any correlation. I am also dosing KZ acroglow and coral vitalizer for a couple of weeks now so it's one of these guys I think.

I had the itch to start adding a weekly bacteria product as a boost/cleaner. Will go through this bottle and see how it goes. I have dosed bacteria before and it’s hard to say I saw appreciable difference with weekly doses. With daily doses and a carbon source I have run ULNS before. Not really interested in that this time around.

Went with the new Brightwell Microbacter Purple. Anyone else using this? Thoughts on benefits vs placebo of bacterial dosing for Acropora? I did my first dose yesterday. It’s kinda chunky and oddly my fish were eating the chunks 🤣

Updates dosing list:

All for reef
Kalkwasser (in top-off)
Microbacter Purple (weekly)
Red Sea aminos (weekly)
Various coral foods including oyster feast and benepets

I haven’t tried the purple but I use mb7 here or there..

Commencing Head’n Shoulders now. Please hold for report back

Iv used CV as well and get great PE

How long have you been dosing the MB purple? I am skeptical that it does what it says it does (reduce nutrients AND feed corals).

I’ve been dosing pns bacteria for a year now (weekly or every other week). My experience is that it help with fighting dinos and cyano by adding diversity. I dose other products such as KZ acroglow and coral vitalizer so I have some nice PE on my sps. Nutrients wise, my gfo lowers po4 and zeovit media takes care of nitrates. PNS bacteria could be helping populate the zeovit.

I just dosed yesterday for the first time. No idea about living up to claims and probably never will have a definitive answer. My tank already looks pretty good (good PE, growth, color etc.) and I don’t have a nutrient issue currently. It does appear to have a particulate component that I could definitely see being used by corals as food (my fish were eating the larger clumps).

I’ve been using the purple bacteria from microbe-lift for a month or two now. Haven’t seen any negatives that’s for sure but nutrients have stayed the same far as I can tell

I thought this may be a good question to ask here, hopefully not too much off topic.

I’m currently dosing kalk through my ato, but want to switch to a continuous drip. I was previously sold on the hydros sole as it is continuous duty and works with my hydros ecosystem and could be controlled easily by my pH input (eg. turn off if pH great than 8.4). I’ve also been looking at the Kamoer continuous use dosing pump It’s much less costly and would likely get the job done but would not be able to have the redundancy of pH control like the sole.
These are the two pumps I’m between:

I’ve never personally played with kalk this way but this is pretty much what @Sisterlimonpot designed for his tank and epics.. his is more complicated than that but I’m sure he could chime in as he most likely started out this way.
