fairy wrasses can go in 20's mandarins realistically can't as there is no way to sustain a copepode population and would be unrealistic to keep adding copepods

I would respectfully disagree. Most wrasses in the Cirrhilabrus/Paracheilinus genus require at least 50 gallons.

Pseudocheilinops ataenia or a possum wrasse would both be a great choice. They don’t require nearly as much space and are easy to get onto prepared foods.
Barnacle blennies are comical to watch and perfectly suited for a nano tank.

Not if you breed your own. It’s easy.

I can’t even imagine my wrasse in a 20 gallon. He’s in a 139 gallon and all over the place. Plus the OP has no lid.

I vote Tail Spot Blenny. One of my favorite fish! Huge personality.

How come nobody has mentioned a clownfish, or are they passé these days. I would vote for a small Clarkii Clown with a condy nem and a Watchman with pistol shrimp if you have a sand bed (hours of fun watching them dig new holes).

I’ve seen those, they’re interesting.
However I’m worried about my rock work being disturbed as I have a somewhat fragile island setup, even though it’s glued.

Algae blenny! For some reason, I think of them like puppy dogs.

Yes! My starry blenny is crazy. I find him everywhere including on top of my return, and inside a large empty snail shell. He also really does eat tons of algae (and everything else he can fit in his mouth). Also love the way he changes colors. He can go from almost white to dark brown, to speckled, to almost black with white spots in minutes. Very cool fish.

My trigger fish have the best personalities. Very unique to each fish too. But they’re too large for a 20g.
Domino Damsels have been great fun to watch. But either get one or get a few cause they will turn on each other when there’s less than 3. I was recommended to get 5 and they have a nice social order. Each fish clearly has their own personality.

Add me to the list of people recommending a tailspot blenny. They are curious, interactive, great at finding unique safe places (in rocks, shells, corals, or any other concealed space), and not intimidated by larger fish.

When you get a larger tank, try a Manini (Convict tang.) I had one in Hawaii that I could hand feed. It would also let me rub his side with my finger.
