I’ve been reefing for 4 years and for the last 3 years, I’ve had every nuisance you can think of : GHA, bubble algae, diatoms, cyano and dinos relentlessly for 3 years. I’ve come to a point where I am pretty much fed up.

Now for the last 2 months (on top of dinos), I’ve been having this horrible thing that reproduces very fast and is taking over the tank. It comes off very easily with a tooth brush and flies everywhere in bits and pieces, but it will come back fast, even worse. It grows everywhere, including the back wall and overflow box.

I thought it was lyngbya and have been dosing peroxyde for about 3 weeks but it’s not working. UV is off and I dose bacteria regularly.

What is it and how can I get rid of it ?

Thanks !

Yea it's hair algae. Get a sea hare and it will be gone in a few weeks. You then need to take it back to the lfs or give it to someone who needs it or it will starve.
Is there a GHA and a regular hair algae ? Because this is not GHA. I also have GHA and you need to pull hard to remove it. This stuff comes off just barely touching it with a tooth brush. It flies everywhere. The color is also much different; this is brown. Texture is not even close either.

Also, my urchin, who cleared my refugium full of GHA in a matter of 2 weeks, will not touch this stuff at all. No fish does.

It looks like standard gha. Do you have a still pic of it.
It may be bryopsis if fish and cleanup crew won't touch it.

I’ve never dealt with lyngbya personally. Usually my approach to tank uglies is turkey bastering rocks and changing filter floss out daily. In addition, adding an army of cleanup crew. Reef cleaners offers from suggestions on what eats lyngbya. I’d maybe ask for a second opinion if it even is lyngbya because I could be wrong.

Dang man I didn’t know yellow Coris wrasses ate cleanup crews. I guess you have to make a decision whether you love that wrasse too much or if you’re tired of constantly battling tank uglies.

I would happily let it go away but the catching is the hard part. It also eats bristle worms, which I do like. 😅
