what makes a clam rare!!!

I think what makes a clam rare is that it's a marine animal that not everyone can collect, thus the guy that farms it, deems it rare! My clam is rare too, when viewed thru the glass it's blueish purple, top down thru the water it's aqua blue, but it really is. it's all about the patterns, i think every clam is rare. giving corals fancy names and such just breeds greed and envy!

Depends on what is readily available and what is not. Also depends on what colors people like to see. I have had many rare clams over the years, some popular colors and some not so much.
These are what I consider rare and what I currently have in my tank:
Blue Squamosa. In my opinion the rarest of all clams that can be kept in the home aquarium. I have only seen like 5 of them for sale in the USA in the past 15 years. Even though they are rare here, there is a University in Australia that farms them so they are pretty common down under. Too bad we can't import them though.
Next is my blue teardrop Squamosa, I have seen a few of these sell recently but not very many over the years have I seen this blue.
And then there is my black and white Maxima, a few years ago these were considered super rare but it seems that recently ORA has hit the jackpot on them and they are fairly easy to find. Still a beauty in my book.
I'll post up some pic's in a bit of clams that I have had in the past that I consider rare.

This is a great question and it's also a personal one. A rarity clam for me is the clam's pattern and how the coloration plays on it. The above Blue spotted teardrop Squamosa exemplifies a rare pattern and an uncommon blue coloration for Squamosa's...
Personally, I would rather have a unique patterned clam than a plain patterned clam with electric (blue/green) color.

Agreed!! I just found two of the ORA black and white clams at a LFS and I was quite surprised at the asking price...cheap!!! I immediately scooped the nicer of the two up. Its a bit small but looks to be super happy in my "no frills" nano-reef. I think it will do really well in the nanos higher nutrient environment than my cleaner main display. So far so good. I super love the black and white clams but they were always so hard to find. I am glad that ORA is releasing more of them as of late. I'll be curious to see how the color is over time as it grows. Currently it looks a lot like the middle clam in your signature at the bottom of your post.
Hey skinz, liveaquaria has been getting in some cultured blue squamies. I think they were 149.99 or something like that and 2-3 inches

Haha I know where I can possibly get one for cheaper. Besides after loosing all my clams I'm giving the clam obsession a break now. I've moved on to Zoa's and Paly's and BRAINS lol....

unfortunate to hear the zoa bug got you! I have seductions and I am quite content with those haha. Insanely pretty and growing like a weed. Started with 4 polyps and in a month I now have 9!
