Yes, the freshwater fish that seem to go through this same thing are,
Oscars (Most people but these it little tanks not realizing they get a foot long.)
Goldfish (Bowls... They need 30 - Pond Gallons depending on the type.)
Common Pleco (People do not realize these get over 2 ft and put them in their 20 gallons.)
It's the same with Frontosas. I have a colony that I've raised from fry in a 5ft. Tank. They are about 4 to 5 inches after a year. I'll be upgrading to a 7ft tank in a month or 2 .

Frontosas are one of my favorite freshwater fish! They look like they do not get that size but man I have seen them at full-size... HUGE!

Mature males can get up to 15 inches....but they are not particularly active swimmers. They are a big heavy fish friendly with great personalities. My favorite freshwater fish!

can someone please explain your measurement system to me like when people say 15x20 15 by 20 inches, cm, meters, feet???

Like @NC122606 says thats the standard units, I tried to use ft for feet for clarity. The Unitless dimensions in my post is in Adult Naso Tang Length Units, so a standard 180gal is 6ftx2ftx2ft, or in ANTLU 4x1.3x1.3

Ok, so I just thought about it, one of the biggest issues.
Captive Bred Fish...
Of course, they are going to know nothing about the actual area that they are supposed to in the wild, they will think that the tank they are kept in is their ocean. So biggest issue they might even know they swim that much.
Not arguing but just saying the argument to all of this.

I am unconvinced that captive breeding helps the problems. Primarily I don't think it changes the numbers much. The adult captive bred tangs are the same size, have the same metabolism and instincts as their 1-2 generation removed wild cousins. In the best case what can we really expect? instead of 8-10x length maybe down to 6-8x length? thats still a 9ft tank for an adult Naso tang. and if we are captive breeding them in quantity to be profitable/affordable where are all these huge tanks they will go in when full grown?

Not the answer that we want to hear if we want to keep them in smaller than dream sized tanks.

In my experience, it's the swimming room that's more important than volume, when it comes to tangs... As long as the tank is at least five feet long, I would say that you're fine.

My tank is 8’ long but only 140-150g. With an open scape I feel pretty comfortable with most tangs, but not sure about a naso

That is what is a bit confusing is it all length or? Finding what Naso tangs really need is a bit confusing as everyone has something else to say. :)
But, I took a look and it looks like a great tank!
*Lol not take

Yes for the large tangs like the 9 inch Dussermeri I have you should provide at least a 8 ft by 3 ft footprint with ample swimming space( not crowded with rock or coral). Another thing is that I have had him for about 3 years he grew from 5 inches to about 9 the first 1 1/2 year. He has maybe grown an inch in the last year and he is fat and healthy from grazing on algae all day. Here is pic. Thanks

72" in length and 24" in depth minimum IMO. The more the merrier. My tank is 4' deep and 10' long and mine curremtly at 5" cruises up and down the tank every evening.

I voted "other" because I don't believe the gallons are the important factor.
Length and width are the important factors IMHO.
8'x3' or 6'x4' would be the minimum for an adult Naso IMHO.
Height really isn't all that important. Maybe 18" to 20" minimum.

We say gallons because it’s what we are used to.
If you say you have a 125 gallon tank we don’t assume it’s 4 feet long. It can be of course

When we say 220 gallons we are making the assumption its 6 feet

Unless for some reason you have a 48x36x36 tank :)

Ok, so I just thought about it, one of the biggest issues.

I would think swimming behavior is based more on instinct than circumstance (being captive bred)...
